Looking for Radio simulation plugin

Post by jlaudon »

Hi

I'm looking for some kind of plugin that can simulate an old radio sound (voice, music), or a way to do this with existung eqs, etc.

Can anyone pls. enlighten me?

thanks

Start by taking out everything below 400Hz, and then reducing everything above 2Khz. Then, if you have the option, make a narrow bandwidth notch of about +4-6db at 500Hz.

If you've got a good compressor, add it as well. You want to start compressing early, at around -20db, with a ratio of at least 4:1.

That will sort of give you a telephone effect, raise the threshold of the compressor (or remove it altogether) for more of an AM radio effect.

I don't think you need to buy anything special for this. In fact, this may be an ideal job for the humblest of DPs bundled MAS plugins.

Thanks for your input - I did try the "telephone" setting in the MOTU eq, which was pretty close, but I'll incorporate your ideas with the freq and compressor, which should get it closer :)

frodos suggestions are great! you could even add a little distortion for the broken speaker effect, and add some noises to simulate bad radio reception - perhaps you can get something out of motus sonic modulator combined with the pattern gate and blend it to the original signal... experiment!

thanks- I bought Ray Gun a few years back (in the good ole days of OS9), and never jumped it up to OSX - just checking to see if I could upgrade, and the Arboretum site is down (gone?) - if anyone has an installer version of ray gun 1.6, let me know.

this may sound too obvious, but run the audio out through a small speaker & record it back

or try an amp simulator plugin

part of the effect in addition to the narrow bandwidth is the speaker sound

You could also record the real thing. Set up a radio in a room with a stereo pair of mics, and tune it between stations on the AM setting just to get the sound. Mix that in under your dialog.

Best way would be to search with your usual eq and disto plugins, and ad noises and hum.
But if you are looking for a good result in short time you could take a look at Izotp Vinyl (it's free)

Very easy to set and rather convincing IMHO

If you want to stay inside DP, the preamp plug in has a setting you could start to experiment with.

load sample into reason...NNXT

map any knobs and faders you might have to a scream distortion unit....

the u tweak the 3 band eq setting with a couple of fingers

whislt another is randomly fiddlin with distortion type as loops it around endless;y -record all of these into DP... splice togther the best bits!

and there's always the resonance and cutoff filter... notchus gracias!!

I guess this sorta copies most of the above mentioned -tho generally I'd listen to any one who has hairy feet and are reknown for sitting around smoking pipes!!!

( the pipe finally makes use of the 3gig macpro I just bought,,,, an ashtray holder!!!!)
