828 MkII not showing up

Post by Dave Eskridge »

Hi All,
I recently tore my system down, moved to a new office, upgraded to DP5.1, and upgraded to OS10.4.8 - all at the same time. I set my stuff back up, and the 828 doesn't show up in DP. The only screen I can get on the computer is a general screen that let's me choose "launch control panel when hardware becomes available" - or something like that. Also, a few times I've powered up the 828 and it seems frozen: There is no blinking cursor and the front panel knobs don't respond. When I switch it off ands back on, it works again ( but the computer still can't find it). I've changed out the firwire cable with one I know is working, and I've re-installed the 828's driver, but I don't know how to proceed from here.
Any trouble-shooting tips would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Dave,

It was unclear if you updated the driver or just reinstalled the original. Make sure you download the latest firewire drivers.

Thanks Paul,
I did figure out after a while that I needed to download the new driver... It turned out after spending some time on the phone with tech guys at Sweetwater and at MOTU that I just needed to send the 828 into the shop. I make most of my money putting notes on paper, so a couple weeks without it won't be a tragedy. Thanks for the help.

I just went through my Firewire not recognizing my interface all of a sudden (Ultralite) after working great. Tried everything.....different cables, re-install software, updating, different Firewire ports.

But, then .....duh......... I read on the MOTU site that I should unplug everything, including the computers AC adaptor for at least 15 minutes.

Then, voila!....all was well.

Just something to try next time a freakout occurs!

One of the things that the tech at MOTU had me try was to disconnect the 828 and switch the voltage up to 220 and back to 115... He called it a "voltage re-set". It didn't have the intended effect in my case, but it's another trick to keep in the bag.

voltage reset ???

this sounds like a super uninspired idea of that tech guy. in other words: bullsh••. electronic components do not like to get more voltage then they are build for, but they also do very much dislike too low voltage. you can destroy boards with too low voltage for a longer period of time....

Have you got any other firewire devices connected to your mac.
Are you running everything off the one firewire port.
