8pre help!
I Just got my 8pre yesterday....and installation of it was ok. The problem I am having is everytime i open up a software program like sonar, nuendo.... i get this hi pitch digital squealing noise in my headphones which lasts about a second or two ,every so often. i set it up at 44.1 k and the software the same. What could this annoying sound be???

Are you using the ASIO driver or the WDM??
Do you have anything else in the firewire chain with the 8pre??
I have an 8pre and havent had any issues, but i did have something similar when I was using the 896HD. I eneded up reinstalling the driver.
Basically uninstalled the device from the device manager...rebooted and then reinstalled. It went away after that.
Also if you have more than one device using firewire it might be causing the noise...maybe try a different port.
I use a FW drive along with the 8pre and havent experienced issues.
Good luck!

i have actually used both wdm and asio....i reinstalled the drivers twice.....i dont know if its my laptop or what. I hope its not the motu. once i restart the computer it works ok for a few minutes then ill hear that digital sounding noise and then after that...whatever audio i am playing back will sound gritty from that point on. When i restart the computer it plays back that same audio fine. this is the only firewire device i have setup....im lost on this.

A buddy of mine was having some issues with sound in general coming out of his laptop...Turned out his power supply was bad causing a ground loop and generating unwanted noise during playback...
I'm wondering if its something like that?
Also have you hooked the Motu up to another computer to see if it does it there?? The way you describe it, it almost sounds like there and actual problem with your laptop and not the Motu itself.
At my practice space I have a computer so I take the motu and my FW drive there and record...then take the tracks home to mix...Between both machines I've not seen any problems lke your seeing.

first of all, thanks for your help. I havent tried the motu at my main studio mainly because i will be using it just as a additional 8 channels for my pro tools rig. i was just trying it out becuase i may do some stuff not in my office which is why i got the 8 pre since you can also use it as an interface. Im wiping out my laptop right now and going to install everything fresh and see if that works...if not ill hook it up to another windows pc and see if that works. thanks again for your help. peace!
8 pre help
Today I tried using the 8pre as a stand alone unit with out connecting it to a computer. With an instrument plugged into it, the meters shows the 8pre is receiving an audio signal. However, I can not hear the audio from the main outs or headphone out.
Any information will ge much appreciated.

I've got the same problem with some programs. I believe the high pitchsounds are errors of the clocking device. Usually the fault of the program not being able the work with the motu.
My cubase SX3 doesn't have this problem, but my DVD viewing program ever so much.
I can't offer you a direct solution, but I'm confinced it's not the MOTU, but the program vs the MOTU.
I hope this gets you on the right pad.
@ jahrome: read the manual about how the assing the internal mixbusses to an output. Can be a pain, but it's worth it

A friend of mine had this exact same problem with his traveller on his laptop. Turns out it was his external firewire drive interfering and causing the high pitched squeals. Im assuming they were competing for the same bus. This seems to be a not uncommon occurrence.

hmmm... i've seen this before. i learned this the hard way a few years back:
when using a laptop to record audio, with an external interface, you must *always* run power from two different legs. one leg to your computer and one to your interface.
you must isolate the two (comp and interface) or you will have this problem every time. pay as much attention to your power source as you do chipset/drivers. this is very very important for everyone to follow.
if you can't find two different sources for each item, merely unplug the laptop and run off of battery while you record and then plug it back in when you're not. you won't have this problem again. i guarantee.

high pitch noises fix
Those wieid high pitch buzzing and digital sounds can be eliminated by disabling your wireless connection, that assuming you have one. Make sure all your anti virus and spy stuff is off too.

you spent almost $ 2000,- on nuendo and buy an 8pre as an interface to this
(possible, but an interesting choice)
Killing the possibilty to get some surround monitoring or some other flexible setup.
In other words all the extra options Nuendo offers you kill with the i/o the 8pre offers.
I think (but can't say this for sure
) this nuendo isn't as legal as it could be.

Hmmm. Software police? Thanks for your comments, even though they were not helpful at all. I have used Nuendo for years at the studio where I work. PAID FOR. The studio that I started over 10 years ago. I bring a copy home with me to use on my tiny set up ( that I do not make money from )because that's the program I know best and I get flack from you??? Nice. Very cool man. I thought that forums like these were for helping eachother out?
