MachFive crashes my computer

Post by optralen »

I just sent MOTU an e-mail about this, but I'm wondering if I might find a quicker solution here. A quick search of the forum turned up a couple similar questions, but the answers weren't too extensive, so here goes again:

I just installed MachFive on my system, with the intent of using it with Cubase SE. I put the MachFive dll's in the appropriate Steinberg VST plugins folder. When I launch Cubase, the program goes through its thing, until it gets to "initializing MachFive", at which point my computer restarts. Taking the MachFive plugin out of the Steinberg VST folder solves the problem, and Cubase runs fine. I downloaded the Cakewalk Sonar demo, and tried to use MachFive with it. Same problem. Sonar starts up, then my computer spontaneously restarts. Taking MachFive out of the Sonar VST folder solves the problem.

MachFive Windows
Windows XP SP2
Core 2 Duo 2.4 ghz
2 gb RAM
nVidia 7900 GT
Creative SB Audigy 4
Cubase SE

Any ideas?

M5 is notoriously ill-behaved on Windows systems, tho, for me, it never faults on start up.

I wonder if its a multi processor issue, as I'm pretty sure M5 predates Intel multi processors. I don't have the same setup as yours (I use Live 5 on a single proc system), but I believe you can turn off the dual-core functionality of your system, which may help you in troubleshooting the problem.

Good luck

I have 2 systems (a desktop and a laptop) both with Windows XP SP2, Mach5 worked fine on my desktop but would behave exactly like yours on my laptop. I found the cause of my problem was Microsoft's Data Execution Prevention (DEP). You can find ways to disable it on Microsoft's website in the knowledge base, But it's only recommened if your DAW is not connected to the internet. Another way is to uninstall Mach5, insert the install disc but do not install yet. Go to Control Panel, Performance and Maintence, System, Advanced, then Performance settings. Now click on the Data Execution Prevention tab, Select the second option for DEP with exceptions, Now click the add button. use the file browser to find the install file (.exe) on the Mach5 CD. Click apply and reboot your system. Now run the installer and it should work after that. If you are installing the update too, You have to do the same thing to the update file also. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies, guys.

It turned out to be the iLok driver. I installed the latest version, and voila! Works like a charm!

Ha! Not so fast! It works until I start adjusting some effects settings, then Cubase crashes with the following error:

Exception Information
code: 0xc000005

AppName: cubasese.exe
AppVer: 1.0.7.87
ModName: machfive.vst.stereo.dll
ModVer: 1.1.0.0
offset: 0013b2cc

dlwend, I tried disabling the DEP, but it had no effect.

Try going back to SP1.

Seems odd but it worked for me on my dual core (similar symptoms).

Have you tried the latest pace driver. I have been using it as VST also with FX teleport with Cubase SX3 and Cubase 4. Works like a charm
