You have to keep in mind that the Mac Pro requires matched pairs, so you are buying 2 512 chips to get 1 gig. I've gotten memory from OWC. They have 1 gig for $219. Here's the link:

RAM has gotten much more expensive as of late. I got 6 gigs for my G5 for under $450 last January. Couldn't get close to that price today. Make sure you get the heat spreaders on your RAM, unless you don't mind more fan noise and the threat of heat-related reliability issues.

RAM has also gotten faster and more stable as well, hence the higher price. It's typical with newer RAM that the price is higher.

Memory Solutions.com has 2 x 1GB sticks for G5 (PC 3200) for about $270. I recall paying in the mid $300s for the same pair during the summer of 2005. It clocks @400Mhz. (HC got a great deal a year ago-- the release of the Intels really had an important impact on RAM prices.)

MacPro Memory (PC5300) clocks in @667Mhz. The same company has a 2 x 1GB kit for just under $370, which sounds on par in retrospect... for faster RAM "to boot".

If I had to make a recommendation, I'd go with Spikey's recommedation for Crucial.

If there's any good news with this, keep in mind that unless you are certain you will be running apps outside of the DAW and rewiring them back to the DAW, more than 4-4.5GB won't do much good.

One other thing to watch for--- if Apple releases a modded version of the Intel (whether with 8 cores or not), watch for any possible RAM upgrades they may employ. That means that PC5300 will come down in price.

1- $229 is the going price to 2GB. Apple's prices are way high.

2- I have only heard bad things about Apple RAM. Seriously!

I usually shop Other World Computing and await a 2GB pair of sticks (1GB each) to bump my ststem to 4GBfrom them.

http://www.macsales.com/

They have never soldme a bad item, RAM ot otherwise. Shipping is fast and I have never had to use customer service, which is, in fact, the best customer service you can get!

Brilliant, Tim.
Some may have wondered how you made the big "000" in even less words.
Now they know.

I've given up the "Tim-wannabe" training; there's no hope.

4allmemory.com has been very reliable (and their prices are competitive).

Beware of the 1Gig bundles though - they cause start-up issues.
