DP 4.61 running on my intel macpro

Post by geoffg »

I just bought a new intel based mac, and just out of curiosity tried running my DP 4.61 on it. I downloaded universal binary updates for my motu828 and then launched dp, entered the serial # and to my amazement, it worked! This was a very simple project I loaded up and I haven't had time to see what it can really handle. But I did drop in an eVerb to see if the plugins worked. And that was fine too.

Has anyone had any experience running pre 5.1 versions of DP on an intel mac? I was really surprised that it worked. I thought 5.1 was necessary on an intel mac.

can someone with Mac Pro (10.4.8) and DP4.6.1 confirm that?

I've heard and read that DP5 crashes often with the Mac Pro, so wondering if we should stay with 4.6.1?

Thanks!

I'm on a MacPro and yes, 4.6.1 does run under Rosetta. However, 4.6.1 and 5.11 cannot co-exist on the same drive. If you try to switch from 4.6.1 to 5.11 or vice versa you have to go through the registration process each time you switch.

5.11 runs virtually crash free on my Mac Pro. All the crashes I've had seem to have been third party pluggin related (mostly Waves). When the plugs were removed, the problems went away.

Thanks Phil for the notes. Sorry, perhaps a somewhat OT question here, but is there stability issues if Rosetta is involved (for 4.61) ??

If all my plugins were already updated and UB compatible, could i save some bugs and remain with 4.61?

You probably loose some CPU REssources having a "middle man" between your computer and DP. I'm talking about Rosetta of course.

I would think that 5.11 is more solid than 4.61 anyway...

Thanks guys for your inputs. I guess it's best to test it out myself and see if it works for my needs.

Thanks!

Given DP's use of memory and the fact that Rosetta is an absolute HOG for memory, I think as soon as your projects start to get a little more taxing, it's going to hose up fast.

DP 5.11 is running magnificently on my MacPro even with the default RAM on the system! :) (1Gig)

I recommend it without question.
