Anybody Here Using a Presonus Firestudio with DP?

Post by James Wilsey »

They've been out for a while- was just wondering if anyone here has heard any reports or reviews, especially in conjunction with DP.

I need to buy an interface before the end of the year (if possible) and the Firestudio LOOKS like it may offer good bang/buck.

Thanks- Jw

James,

The Firestudio is a product that I've been looking forward to for many months now, having had several talks with them about how well the Firepod was doing yet would like to see more features. Personally, I've NOT tried this. But I'd be happy to check-in with my tech support team @ Sweetwater to see if anyone has come across any major (or minor) issues.
Thank you,

My comments won't go any further than what BradLyons already told you.
I don't have a Firestudio, i have a Firepod and it is very, very, very good.

Hope this helps.

Well - I jumped into the fire(studio) and bought one...installed last night and seemed to work pretty well out of the box.

I spent a lot of time trying to troubleshoot other issues (getting it to play nice with a Line6 Toneport, that doesn't have much clocking options), so I haven't spent too much time putting it thru it's paces. It works- not noisy, plenty of output. and maybe a little bright compared to what I'm used to, but that is probably normal.

I plugged a cheap ribbon mic into it to check the preamps, which sounded clean....it's a fairly low output mic and cranking the gain didn't introduce any noise (that I could hear). I'll be recording more with it over the next few weeks, will know better- but I'm not an over-fussy audio nerd, so obviously your mileage may vary...I am using it mostly to monitor thru and record the occasional audio track.

Anyway- so far so good...

I've been using a Firestudio and a digimax FS with DP for a couple of months now.

The software works very well with DP. It's easy to send any chanels (or click tracks) to the FS and to give each headphone amp a totally unique mix. I'm also very happy with the really clean pres, clocking, and convertor. The good price is also a nice bonus.

The cons: more latency than motu interfaces, but it's pretty standard compared to plenty of other units, and I use the zero latency setup anyway. Also, I've had it stop playing through one speaker a couple of times, but restarting it has fixed the problem.

Questions welcome.

firepod noisy?

Post by doubleD2 »

bought the firepod several years ago and at a minimum, my big mistake was not putting it thru the paces during warranty. Since I have struggled with the dreaded clicks and pops using DP4.5 and G4 867 with 1.25GB Ram, OS 10.3.9 ...

and now on a G5 with 1.5GB Ram and 10.4.9, am strugglling with noisy and rythmic beeps and activity related (mouse,kb) spikes ... whether cpu is on or off. seems to be related to firewire connection. occurs in multiple environments, multiple cpu's ... and current hypothesis is that my problem is both firepod and G5 related.

so advice is be careful ... we do get what we pay for (friend has worked successfully with 828 interface with less endowed G4 and G5 for years).

of course any wisdom shared regarding my predictament would be greatly appreciated ...

I've had exactly the same type of interference happening to my laptop setup with FirePod.
I searched the web and the answer is lying there among hundreds of posts in dozens of Forums where users are facing the same problem: audio interference that changes in characteristics according to disk usage, mouse movement, type of image on the desktop, amount of clear and dark surfaces on the desktop, monitor screen on or off also changes the sound of the interference.

Although the solution is occasionaly reported it usually causes quite a stirr, mostly among those who are not facing the problem and, therefore, can not test the solution.

Anyway, it works.

The problem is Power (AC) related and the only solution is to use ungrounded power supply connection on your mains cable. Easy on a laptop, easy on a desktop. Absolutely safe on a laptop.

Some contenders to the problem often suggest using a DI box with a ground lift. Most of the time it's a waste of time.

Needless to say, the problem is not the FirePod.

The issue may be a Firewire ground loop. I had a noise problem with my Motif ES USB that was resolved completely by cutting the shield and ground wire on the USB cable connecting the Motif. Lifting ground on all devices is not the best way to apporach this type of problem, especially when mics and guitar amps are involved. Someone might want to try modifying a Firewire cable... I'm sure the pinout is availaable on the web somewhere.
