2408 MK3 with Behringer DDX 3216

Post by louielou »

Anyone have a 2408 MK3 set up with a Behringer DDX 3216 Digital Mixer using Optical Lightpipe connection between the two?

If so, what is the best configuration to enable effects thru lighpipe from the DDX bus outputs? I can configure them to effects out thru bus from the standalone mode (monitor connected to monitor outs on DDX) but not with the monitors outs on the 2408MK3.

I'm not real clear on what you're asking, but I might have some tips... I am running a Yamaha 02R digital board with 2 adat cards, & 1 analog I/O card. I think this is a similar scenario to what Behrenger does, I.E. "Buy our really expensive board with a lot of inputs, & then we'll be happy to sell you the parts to make outputs".
I run the 2 adat cards straight to the 2408, banks B & C, and bank A is configured as analog. At the moment, I have 2 EQ's & a 4 bus connection to a second computer plugged into the analog connections on the back of the 2408.
So lets pretend America's next idol has come calling to grace you with his/her/their talent, & you determine you're going to need every trick in the book to take their money & still sleep at night, so we'll use everything.

Assume just a single instrument/mic/module source. Here's the routing:

Source material input to mixer->
Mixer bus outputs 1/2->
2408 Bank B-1/2 input (via lightpipe)->
Audio software track input (Cubase, Sonar, Fluity Roops or whatever)->
Subgroup or FX bus created & assigned to 2408 Bank A-1/2 analog out->
Equalizer (or whatever snd/rtn effect box wiggles your worm)->
2408 Bank A-1/2 analog input->
Software matrix again->
2408 Bank A-3/4 Analog out->
Worm wiggler #2->
2408 Bank A-3/4 input->
Software matrix again->
2408 Analog Bank A-5/6 output->
Computer#2 (which will run every software effect that it can handle & still sound good->
2408 bank A-5/6 analog in->
Software track recording->
2408 Bank B-1/2 output (Lightpipe Rtn)->
Mixer tape rtn busses, or channel inputs.

Wow. That band either sounds really good now, or cause you got the smokin deal on those radio shack patch cords, the system is humming it's own tune!
The advantages in this scenario are the #2 computer carries the big load so the first can assure clean recording. The loop connections on Bank A can exist in a ton of different configurations without ever standing on your head to re-route cables. Relief from latency problems by using outboard FX, & HUGE gains if #2 computer is used.
In the scenario above, I haven't even tapped the mixers onboard effects which can be applied prior to the software, or on the return for that oh-so-gifted vocalist who has to sound "just so" because all these gadgets are mucking up her voice... Yeah, right. And if you're really loaded, the effects loops supplied by the mixer are still usable for even more external boxes. And so far... everything still is on it's own discreet loop!
The monitor mix can happen from any number of possibilities, I take mine from the main stereo bus of the mixer... The recorded material fed from tape bus inputs, & live material (includes MIDI fired sounds) are assigned to stereo bus & the desired bus outs that match track numbers. This works well for monitoring the recording process & converts to mixdown at the push of a button or two. Just be careful you don't monitor a signal that's feeding the bus if it's also being output from the software, at the least it'll be doubled, & could squeal like a piggy. The 2408 also has a main out L/R that could make a good mixdown monitor point.

Hope this helps, have fun!

Dang, I just sold my O2R to simplify life.
Now I'm thinkin' I should've had you come set it up properly, Airstorm.
I even had the same config, sans the second ADAT card.

Well I'll be a Scarab Beetle.
Dang. Dang. Dung. :shock:

Wow man.....Now can you sum it up in english..hehe...

Ok it looks like you have a audio mix monitoring setup. right?

I mainly use my DDX for ADAT inputs into my 2408MK3. I generally do all my mixing monitoring from my monitor out on my 2408MK3.

I guess I should play around with the busses on my DDX to see what I can come up with.

My setup works perfectly except for the input of FX before the software (cubase).

Thanks for your input.
