i have a bunch of 2gig(unreliable) jazz drives with emulator 4 samples on them that i want to back up to dvd disk's for archiving and then for playability in mach 5...what is a smart way to do this?
i would have to do this in my G3 becuz it has the scisi card..if i load mach five in the G3 will UVI recognize emu4 soundfiles from the jazz disk?
i would try it right now but i cant find my doggle (its been 3 days now)
Now there's a coincidence... I'm about to do something similar. The way I'm looking at doing it is using Toast to simply copy the Jaz Drives to DVD, retaining the E4 format. You've then got a perfectly archived E4 library. I've been doing much the same burning CDs from a E4 formatted hard-drive for years now without a problem. UVIx sees the CDs just fine.
If I remember rightly, from the few I've done, there's a small problem with UVIx and velocity layers (which are used loads in EMU's own libraries) - it messes up velocity fades because MachFive only does velocity splits. UVIx just maps the sample over the whole range of the fade (I think - it's been a while). This usually means that you've got two or more samples being triggered at the same time with no velocity control over the balance between their volumes.
Keeping your samples in E4 format would mean that if MachFive V2 ever arrives... and if it has velocity fades... and if a new UVIx handles it OK... then you might end up with your library intact and playable without serious tweaking. That's a lot of ifs, and as ever it'd be nice if we could refer to a feature list on MOTU's website, but that's a whole other discussion.
Of course, if your samples don't tend to use velocity fades... no problem.
oh man this is great news......would that be toast 7? i have 6.....i havent tried toast just becuse i thought it wouldnt recognize the E4 formated jaz drives...but i was hoping that m5's uvi would see the jaz drives like it does the cd roms.......now if i can only find my m5 dogle!!!!!!!!!
not sure if i can do this in toast 6...after the puter doesnt recognize the disk and gives you the options to ignore, format or eject, i press ignore? then i cant find it with toast to do anything with it
When I last did it, I was using a E4-formatted SCSI drive hooked up to OS8.6(!). It'd be a very old version of Toast, but its disk copy worked perfectly to make CDs. Toast would scan the entire SCSI bus and present a list of drives it could see (even if OS8 couldn't).
How's this for old money - I was using a 1GB SCSI drive (you can't buy them any more) and burning the first 700MB to the CD. The format still works and I'm using the CDs now, via UVIx and WinXP Home.
Hopefully I'll be able to try doing this again this week - I need some samples from my E4's IDE drive, but this time I've got a G3, OS9 and 2GB SCSI drive to play with. I'll let you know.
Have you tried Disk Imaging the drive? Is your Jaz drive SCSI?
yeah!!! i was too... 1gig micropulis harddrive or somthing like that, it cost 1200 for 1 gig lol.....and my emu cost me $10.000 fully loaded with simms..
yes my jaz is scisi and it is now hooked up to my g4 instead of the g3 by way of an adaptec card with the lastest drivers...never tried any kind of disk imaging stuff before, not sure how!....will try later on this evening
Have you had any success? I spent all yesterday trying to reach my E4 stuff. Toast would see the SCSI drive fine (it's "Device Copy" you need) but crashed when attempting to take the data off. I put this down to a very old Mac I'd not used before and Toast (creaky v5.2) not playing.
My solution now is to mount the EMU hard-drives in a USB or Firewire caddy at a cost of $20 or so and go direct to Windows and UVIx... not much use for your Jaz stuff, I guess?
yes i was able to make a disc image with the G4 then burn with toast but just one 1gig jaz disc, all my 2gig jaz disc's are corrupted and i have had to load one file at a time into the e4 and then save it to a new jaz disc..it is a hassel becuz when you get to a corruped file it freezes the e4 so everthing before the corruped file freezes as well, then you have to start all over again and avoid loading the corruped file to the e4..learning faster ways to do it as i go along but it is a hassell!!!!
You're telling me it's a hassle! UVIx doesn't see my USB drive directly - although the Free version of Chicken Systems' Translator will happily see it and make a disk image - all 18gig of it. New hard drive on order so that I can put the image somewhere...
what do you think about sweetwaters deal they have going on with kontakt 2? if you have an old sampler just send a pic or proof of purchase and they will discount kontact 2!!!
i purchased my e4 from them loaded!!! they should send me kontakt for FREE!!!
