Plug that emulates Nuke on Distressor w/ room mics???

Anybody have any success emulating the Nuke setting on a distressor on Drum Room mics?

My current number one favorite compressor:
SV315 from www.sonalksis.com

They have demo versions you can check out. The SV517 EQ is very nice also.

Nuke on Distressor is (if I am not mistaken) based on the SSL Talkback Mic compressor. You can get a free SSL talkback compressor plug from SSL here:

Not that I am aware of.

and - in my experiences - plugs generally dont sound as good as the best hardware..... (such as a Distressor)

Actually...yes...the SSL talkback mic compressor was (and is) used to squash drum room mics to the extreme to get that completely squashed sound overhead sound, and the description of what Nuke is typically used for is exactly the same. Nuke may not be exactly emulate the SSL talkback mic comp, but it is intended for the same purpose.

And, of course, plugs don't sound as good as hardware, but that's not what the original poster was asking for - he was asking which plug came close to the Nuke setting. IMO, that is the SSL LMC plug.

I think the Mixpressor from PSP is the best for nuking anything.....drums, bass, vocals...the neighbor's cat....

I haven't heard the Nuke setting on a distressor, but you might try "all-buttons mode" on an 1176 plug-in. It gets some nasty smashin' going on!

Funny I was just listening to some Drum 'n Bass loops and wondering about the sound and remembered my old Distressor on Nuke. Had to sell it a couple years ago to finance a move

Anyway it was on my list to try some comps out and see how close I get. My first choice to try would be the marvelous Sonalksis 315 that Dave mentioned but I'll also download the SSL and give it a try.
But the main reason I'm posting is a couple of suggestions. One is to try lower tech mics with this technique. IOW choose a 57 over a U-67 for instance. Or a cheaper/lower tech mic yet. Also had good luck putting the mic in the next room from the drums (like a bathroom especially- or a hallway), leaving the door open and micing the leakage, or put it in the doorway and aim into the bathroom. Also just putting the mic in the middle of the drum room aiming the mic toward a back corner of the room, pointed away from the drums rather than straight at the drums. These stunt sounds are more about the room and placement than the drums sometimes. Experimentation is the key.
A cool use of these sounds is to nuke the crap out of the room mic and just bring a tiny bit into the mix with the normal drum mics. Another idea is nudging the room mic track back in time a few ticks (to compensate for the inherent delay from distant micing) and create some different interactions. It puts the room tone back "on top" of the drums rather than a delayed effect. I've gotten some cool sounds that way.

ssl plug is cool, but it doesn't sound anything like the nuke setting. the all button 1176 is much closer. the ssl gets too midrangey and lacks the messy smoothness of the distressor. i have good luck with the ren comp with a low threshold and i play with the ratio...

The Chandler EMI TG whatever-the-number-is is my new favorite smashing plug-in. It's not cheap, you can get it at mercenary for about 300 clams. But it sounds like nothing else in plug-in land. I've compared it to my three mainstays (Sonalksis, RennComp and RennVox) and it is just a whole different thing. Very very cool. Try the demo (iLok required, two weeks or so with no restrictions...)

Oh, and it's got a bug in DP 5.01, bypass no work, but otherwise has been stable and sounds magnificent...

I also demoed a bunch of URS compressors at the same time, and I'm sorry to say they thoroughly underwhelmed me... I use (and like) their console EQ plugs, but to my ears the compressors were decidedly 'meh'...

Absolutely not. The SSL plugin is a comp with the addition of tailback mic modeling. The Distressor is strictly a compressor, and even that is quite different.

There is no mic modeling in the LMC - it's just a compressor.

LiquidMix has a nice Distressor emulation, and the Nuke setting works well.
