MOTU 828 firewire """BIG PROBLEM HERE"&q

Post by flymykite »

I just bought a 828 couple days ago, I download the latest version of the driver on the MOTU website. (MOTU_Universal_Audio.dmg) I did the installation without any problems. I opened the MOTU Audio Setup preferences and I was able to see the 828. Then I lunched Cubase SX and started recording some guitar tracks and the sound was cutting, so I just closed the 828 and tried to reopen it. Since then, I'm not able to see the 828 anywhere (that's included my driver and my control panel) except in my system profiler (Unknow device) for the firewire port, and everytime I boot the interface the clock lights are bouncing back between 44.1 and 48.

I've changed my firewire cable (Not Working)
Uninstall the driver and trashing the prefs an reinstall the driver
(Not Working)
I went at my friend place to try it out on his Powerbook G4, same thing.
So I think that it's not a software problem

My computer is a G4 400Mhz / 1Gig of RAM with OS X 10.3.9

Is there a way to reset the hardware of an old 828? or fixed that problem?

Thanks in advanced!

Could be a couple things. First, check to make sure that the clock source is set to internal. I'm not sure if Cubase can over-ride the motu control panel but, it's worth checking into.

Also, does the 828 settle on a clock source when powered up WITHOUT a fire cable attached? I've had trouble on occasion with firewire connectivity. It seems that I have one cable that doesn't like the 828 very well. Also, once in awhile my external drive will conflict with the 828, even though they're on different ports, when I boot or hotswap. But, I'm usually back up and running in 30 seconds. It doesn't happen very often sometimes the connection isn't good enough I guess. Mine has been very solid though and these problems are pretty rare for me.

Also, do they recommend having the unit hooked up before installing the driver? Seems like I remember that somewhere.

Still not working....

Post by flymykite »

the real problem that I got is that when i'm opening my Motu Audio Setup,
I only got the general tab with the Enable Pedal options and the lunch Motu Audio Setup when hardware becomes available. My driver don't see my 828 at all. I'm not able to change my Clock by hitting the preferences, because they're not visible in my panel.

I think my firewire port on the 828 is dead... I heard about a hardware reset. So bassically, i will need to open the device and do it my self. I cannot believe that i'm the only one who got that problem...

And I'm not expecting anything from the MOTU tech peoples, they seem to don't give a ••••... No response from them... Nice customer service and Supportjavascript:emoticon('')

flymykite, I have spent the past three days with my motu 828 with your exact same problem and let me tell you, its happening everywhere. I currently have my motu taken apart and there is also no sort of reset device i can see unless it is the random potentiometer in the middle. I have no idea what's going on but, I've only owned this unit for three days and I can already say I'm dissatisfied If anybody cares to tell me the magic solution to my problem, I'd love to hear from you.

I'm having similar problems. Having it show up as 'unkown device'. And now it's vanished completely. Re-installed drivers etc...

But I've got a new Intel Powerbook......do downloading latest drivers now.....hopefully will sort it out. If not, I'll be back here with you guys.

I have similar problems recently. When I put the computer to sleep it will not wake up the 828. In fact today I am having great difficulty getting the whole system working. I've shut down and restarted, I've disconnected external drives, I've switched the 828 off then on etc. I have had this 828 for 5 years and only recently has this been occuring. It also did it on an older G4 recently when my new intel mac was having a warrantee repair.
Usually when I get it going, it is great, provided I do not put the computer to sleep.
Could it be that the firewire chipsets are finally dying?

i had that a long time ago.
with my setup i had to disable the second f/w port to get things sorted out.
P4 2.8
win xp pro
audigy 2 ( disabled firewire on this )

resetting the device is pushing a sequence of buttons on the front ( sorry dont remember right now )

Same problem here basically the only workaround and its not a good one is to unplug the 828 from the back of the G5 dual 2ghz firewire port with the unit and the mac on then plug it back in

I tried to contact Motu --big suprise no response. My 828 isn't showing up at all when I power it on. Intel MacBook Pro with OS X.4

I get the same message that no firewire device is found. Sucks because i just sold my other audio interface to get this one.

In order to reset your 828, you must detach your firewire cable from the back. Then press in the setup knob on the front and turn it all the way to the right until you see "Factory Defaults" on the LCD screen. After that it should tell you what to do. Hope that helps. Oh and Jay, make sure you have the latest driver for your interface installed on your computer and located in: HardDrive-->System-->Library-->Extensions. Should be called "Motu FireWire Audio.kext" assuming you are using firewire/usb to connect. Keep us posted.

thanks

thanks -- I do have the latest driver installed as far as I can tell. Also I have the 828 mk1 so there is no display on this unit. Luckily I'm returning the 828 to the person I got it from. perhaps I'll have better luck if I just get an mk2 instead.

i think i have the solution.
I am guessing everyone has an original 828 not the mark 2.
And i am guessing that everyone installed the UB driver.
Unistall the UB driver and install the previous one all should be back to normal.
However before you do this you need to unistall the UB version and the unistall the previous one.
Then reinstall the driver version before UB.
This seemed to have worked for me.
Good Luck.

I'm having the "unknown device" problem with an 828mkii on a Mac Pro. Seems to me it has been going on ever since the latest security update. Tried latest and other drivers with no luck. Tried unplugging the firewire cable. Tried restarting, different hard drive, repaired permissions etc. What really confuses me is that it worked one time back on Dec 16th and since then the 828-2 seemd to have just disappeared. D___ Apple; D___ Motu.

Update: and now all of a sudden it is working. Did a shut down and let the computer sit for a while. Also shut down the 828-2. Turned on the computer, then turned on the 828, and sh_t if it wassn't there! What is going on?
