windows xp driver help!!!
I have an 8pre. I had no problems getting this thing to work on my mac at my main studio...no problems what so ever. Installing this thing in windows xp is a nightmare. I have tried 3 different computer running xp and only one worked which is my laptop. It worked only after i clean it out completely and reinstalled everything. before that, I was getting weird squeeling sounds and clicks and pops. Now its ok. But when i try to install drivers on the other 2 computers.....it says it was installed ok and everything but it doesnt recognize the hardware. what is up???? i tried the cd and the "updated" drivers from the website. Is it something I'm doing wrong??....the hardware????....or the drivers???? anyone have similar experiences??? help!
Not sure, but could this be linked to the known problem of XP SP2 restting the FireWire SID Speed to S100 when it needs to be S400?
There is a fix for this available on the MS web site, (sorry, don't have the exact link to hand) but if you do a search on the MS Knowledgebase for "IEEE 1394 problems" I'm sure you'll find the appropriate article and fix.

Hi avamark,
MS is microsoft, as said emmrecs.
For the MS patch, and install read the following:
The patch that really solves your PB is the KB885222. I tried with SP1 without KB885222 -> it works, with SP2 without KB885222 -> doesn't work, with SP2 and KB885222 -> it works
If your OS is Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2), and you've got an internet connection, update your system with windows update, the patch is contained in the updates. If your windows is a cracked version (or if not...
) download the patch here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885222/en-us in english, or here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885222/fr in french.
Read the article carefully and download the patch.
Maybe it is not necessary to uninstall MOTU drivers before installing the patch (I don't know which version of driver you want to install, the last 3.6.7.3 I guess, and how the differents driver versions interact with windows and his registerbase... so...), but it's more safe. so do the following:
First, uninstall your MOTU properly, for this
keep the MOTU plugged and on
1) kill the MFWAKeys.exe process
2) uninstall the MOTU drivers via start/programs/MOTU/uninstall icon, or via the "add/remove programs" panel (select MOTU audio, uninstall).
3) right clic on the "unknown device " ( Arrow your MOTU in fact, that's why I told you to keep your MOTU plugged and on to uninstall it
) in the device manager, and clic on uninstall. confirm.
Now you can switch off your 8pre and unplug it.
Install the patch, and reboot.
Now don't pass this very important following step:
1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\PCI\1394_hc_hw_id\1394_instance_id\Device Parameters
(To locate the FireWire controller information, follow these steps:1. Open Device Manager. To do this, right-click My Computer on the Start menu, click Manage, and then click Device Manager under System Tools. You can also click Properties under My Computer, and then click Device Manager on the Hardware tab.
2. Locate your FireWire controller in the IEEE 1934 Bus host controllers section.
3. Right-click the FireWire controller entry, click Properties, and then click the Details tab.
4. Click Device Instance Id. You see a string of letters and numbers that is similar to the following:
PCI\VEN_104C&DEV_8020&SUBSYS_00D81028&REV_00\4&19FD8D60&0&60F0
The information between the two slash marks (\) is the ••œ1394_hc_hw_id". ••œVEN_104C&DEV_8020&SUBSYS_00D81028&REV_00••

896HD synch
Hi,
I'm new on this forum because I tried everything to get my 2 MOTU 896HD synch ! Even with patches, MOTU call, and so on, it doesn't work well. (win xp pro - chip^set TI, etc...)
I also tried (again) what you said Baptiste...Without result
I'm fed up !
Is there on this forum somebody who really solve the problem ?
Do somebody know a recording studio working with 2 or 3 896 or 896HD ?
An MIDI Timepiece doesn't solve the problem too !
It seems to be redundant...since 2005 !!! And at the end of 2006 the problem's still there.
Thanks

Re: 896HD synch
I having the same problem trying to get my Traveler and 896HD to sync. The manual states very clearly that you just daisychain them with firewire cable and it will work. It doesn't !!!!Mandrak wrote:Hi,

I have tried all options, including patching the drivers as what Baptiste has suggested, please view my posting in http://forum.cubase.net/phpbb2/viewtopi ... 71b#499997
Can anyone out there who is kind enough to share how they manage to sync two MOTU interfaces running on Windows XP.

I worked hard to find a solution !!!

so wha tI've just done today is :
install win 2000 sp 2
instal motu driver 5
install my initial firewire card ( with VIA chipset

and...
everthing is OK

the 2 896HD are in synch without the use of MTP
I tried to record 16 tracks with samplitude, everything work hard !
Conclusion...
VIA chipset on firewire card could work well with MOTU
And win 2000 uses less memory than XP and work fine.

So where does the problem comes from ?
win xp sp2 ?
the new Motu driver ?
I'm fed up with this and I don't want to search anymore...

I replaced my installed MOTU drivers with old version 3.5.3.2 running on XP, but alas not working.
Are those 'VIA Chipset' you mention is actually the Texas Instruments chips. I have not heard of VIA 1394 chips.

Hi hklam,
My firewire card is a VIA chipset VT6307
.
Sorry for posting 2 time the same post ( on 2 forums), I'm new on this forum and made a mistake while posting...I won't do it again
Did you try to change your firewire card ?
Because I can tell you that even under win 2000, with my "texas instrument" chipset firewire card, it doesn't work !!!!!! That is the reason why I returned to the Via chipset (because I used this firewire card when I only had 1 896HD).
I have no shame using win2000 pro. I've been using it for years in my recording studio. Things went wrong just when I tried (for no reason !!!
) to upgrade my system with win xp.
Morality : when it works well, don't touch it !

I have never tried using another Firewire interface. The Firewire I used in built-in on the motherboard. It is a Texas Instrucment.
It is not an easy solution to replace the XP to Win 2000. First you incur more money to buy one, second you need to reinstall the whole system.
Just to confirm, your 896HDs are connected to each other with Firewire, the master is connected to the PC via firewire. Is that right?

Yes, each others are connected with firewire. And the master one (#1) is connected to the computer via firewire cable.
My via firewire card doesn't make synch ok with win xp pro sp2...As well as my texas instrument ...
Did you try win xp pro SP1 ?
I bought a licence for win2000pro a few years ago...I still can use it ! And SP4 for win2000 is free. I've just upgraded my win2000 sp2 to sp4 and everything works well !
I also bought a computer with win xp pro sp2...I could have tried with xp pro configuration.
A lot of people seems to have synch problem with win xp SP2. For sure something is going wrong with this service pack 2...
If I have new informations concerning win xp sp2 configuration, i will tell you via this forum.

It will be a lot of effort to revert XP from SP2 back to SP1 as this is not a new PC or fresh install. I have been using this PC for a while recording and too many things have been stacked on it, e.g. plug-ins, drivers to easily reintall. So it not an option.
Yes, you are right. We are having all the problems because Microsoft make changes on their Firewire drivers without considering the impact on current users of Firewire. Very bluntly, they messed up with the 1394 drivers when they rollout the SP2.
As per Baptiste posting above, they have released a patch to address the problem which kind of reverting the SP2 firewire drivers back to SP1, but not work for all situations.
If you are interested in detail how and why they messed up with the 1394 drivers, there is a great article in RME site.
I almost ran out of ideas to troubleshoot the problem other that going to the shop to buy a new 1394 card.

Thanks hklam, I'm goin' to read this article from RME (great principal and german outsider of MOTU in windows environment with creamware according to me... it's another subject !!!) and I give you my opinion (or not, I haven't got the "science infuse", it's in french...it's 7h38 here, the 24th december...please wait a lot...
