UltraLite vs. Skype on OS X

My UltraLite works fine for most applications on OS X 10.4 (Intel), but Skype 2.5 exhibits strange behavior. I hear the various effects sounds and ringtones, but once the call is connected, no audio can be heard or transmitted. After such a call, the hang-up sounds and others work fine. Preferences | Audio shows MOTU UltraLite for output, input and ringing. Any ideas?

I have the same problems when running Skype with MOTU896. Preferences show the 896 selected for input and output... but no audio I/O during call.
