Apogee Symphony card vs MOTU 424 card

Post by bigcityrecording »

The big question for me is: how much credit is due the Symphony card for its reported 1.6ms latency while recording/monitoring through the Mac Pro and how much is due to the super fast Mac Pro?

Will the 424 card possibly be equivalent or better perhaps?

For the money, the 424 card has more features than the symphony including the adat sync...

Is MOTU even making a PCIe or x card?

Yes they already have both the E & X in the 424. You buy them from motu as an upgrade right now.

Don't be concerned with latency as they are both ultra low. Be concerned with sound quality. The MOTU interfaces(of which I own several) that connect to the 424 card are not of professional quality. They sound dull, boxey, hard. Not really useful things in a pro environment. On the other hand, Apogee converters(of which I own several) that plug into the Symphony card sound amazing! Open, transparent, solid, natural.

I can't use the A to D or D to A in any of the MOTU stuff. It really runins the sounds going in and out. I use my 1296 for the AES in and out and the WC in. I use my 2408MKIII for the light-pipe in and out. That's it.

I use my 2408 the same - I have apogee convertors feeding the digi in....

However, there is the Black Lion upgrade of the clock/convertors which has gotten very good reviews. In this case, I'd attach an ad16x to banks a and b of the 2408 and use bank c as analog (after modification) in a pinch....

Still my concern (after sound quality, of course) is latency since it would be nice to use the UAD and Altiverb while tracking....

Leaning towards selling off the 2408 and going with full-blown symphony system...
