Will a Macbook Pro handle this...?

Post by dudefish »

I'm ready to update my computer. I currently use the very first 17'' Powerbook - 1 gig ram and 1 ghz processor. I would like to stay with a laptop as I use my computer for another business as well and do a little mobile recording. I currently have DP 4.61 but would upgrade to 5.11 when I get the new laptop.

I mainly produce demos or albums for local singer/songwriters. I produce everything within the computer except for using a real guitar player for all guitar parts and then record all the vocals. I end up with a lot of tracks and plugins by the time I'm done with a song, and I'm sure the Macbook Pro would handle the track count and plugin count, I'm just worried about the Virtual Instruments.

Currently, if I try to use a couple virtual instruments, my system bogs down and I have to freeze tracks, etc. to make things work and I waste a lot of time.

I would like to be able to open a few VIs, such as Battery2, Mach5, Ivory, etc. Currently, this is almost impossible. Would a Macbook or Macbook Pro allow this to work without the computer slowing down noticably?

Also, I currently have my audio interface (mio 2882) plugged into the firewire 400 jack and my tracking and sample harddrives chained on the firewire 800 jack.

From reading other posts, it looks like I should get the Macbook Pro and separate the firewire busses by using the expresscard slot. Would this help eith the VI's

If I go for the Macbook Pro, will the 2 gig of ram be sufficient to run a few VIs or would would I notice a significant difference with the 3 gig. If so, is it better/cheaper to get the extra gig 3rd party and install it myself rather than the preinstalled extra ram?

My wife needs a better computer than our old sawtooth desktop as it is just showing the signs of age. I was going to get her a new Macbook and then save up for a desktop Mac Pro to use exclusively in my studio, but if the Macbook Pro will handle my needs, then she is willing to take my 17" Powerbook and I'd save having to buy her a laptop and me a Mac Pro desktop.

I was quite suprised at what all they got going on this thing & this was the model prior to the current speed boost. Get the 3 gigs of RAM from another source (cheaper) also Mach 5 is not ready to go on the Intel Macs yet so consider what else you would use. (I don't know about the other VI's you're asking about)

From what I've been reading on this board & others these new laptops are at least as powerful as a moderate G5 setup. I use a dual 1.8 G5 right now with 4GB RAM & it does pretty well with VI's. Good luck.
