I don't think any DAW runs crash free, ever. That's like saying you'll never get a flu.
Now, with that in mind, I have used DP relatively crash free so far on my 2.0 Ghz Core Duo MacBook with 2 GB of RAM. It crashed twice on me when I tried to record at 96kHz to a FW400 drive. But stopped crashing after a reboot.
Still, it behaves rather strangely lately. The CPU load goes up to 50% with only a handful of tracks which are, however, streamed from an IDE drive sitting in a rather cheap enclosure based around the Genesys chips. I've dealt with picky software before, so I think I'm going to try recording onto a faster SATA drive, or perhaps a drive based around the Oxford chipset.

I disagree. Seems Motu has convinced you to buy into it's inferior premature release strategy. You pay to beta test!!!
I have a dual 1.42 g4 running logic, protools and recently DP4.61. On OS 10.3.8 my system is bullet proof. Can't remember the last time my system crashed. I don't think Logic has ever crashed except when using a BFD instance with to many layers for my system to handle and my protools mix system just doesn't crash....honetly don't remember it crashing! I have to say DP 4.61 is pretty stable. Had it open for a few days and never a problem.
And a system should be able to stay open for days chugging away and not crash. Don't be a beta tester unless you get it free!

All the sequencers I've used crashed at one point or another. Some like Cubase corrupted song files. Logic sometimes would close down without a reason at all, when doing almost nothing.
I didn't say it's normal for the apps to behave that way. It's like living in a post nuclear war city - it's no picnic, but what can you do. Just have to adopt to it - save more often, try to find patterns in crashes, use tested hardware and updates.
Go back to Notator or Performer?
Or we can choose the more active way - complain on the boards, tell customers in music stores about it, and write songs about sequencers crashing.

OK, so you tried trashing permissions, rebuilding databases, deleting and re-initiating I/O bundles.
Here are a couple more ideas to try:
1] Get a new firewire cable. A very smart networking guy once told me that about 80% of all networking problems are cables.
2] Did you try restarting wile holding down the shift key? This will bring you up in safe mode, but will do a file system check before it boots. Then restart normally.

This is the message the I've got in my crash log:
Date/Time: 2006-11-19 00:44:11.026 -0800
OS Version: 10.4.8 (Build 8L2127)
Report Version: 4
Command: Digital Performer
Path: /Applications/MOTU DP5 Folder/Digital Performer 5.1.app/Contents/MacOS/Digital Performer
Parent: WindowServer [54]
Version: 5.1 (5.1)
PID: 246
Thread: 11
Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001)
Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS (0x0001) at 0xbbc29f00
I've got a month old new imac duo 2 core processor, 1 GB RAM (Going to be upgrading as soon as I can get to a store), OS 10.4, MOTU Ultralight at 41000, buffer at 128... I've used DP 5.1 for the last month, it would quit rarely in that time, but became more frequent, and now can't keep the program open for more than 30 seconds no matter what I'm doing.

Hi medicmatt,
I'm stumped your system ever worked at 128 buffer.
Mine crash within 1 minute at 256.
512 is usable in case of light CPU use.
I can get some work done with 1024, multiplier 2 (or 3, or 4), if I DO NOT use Reason (intel version) thru Rewire.
But I've learned saving after EVERY action.
Never been so screwed with Motu products till now.
Better days to come ? When ?
