well if you're looking for a limiter / dithering tool i suggest waves L1-L3 series. i think every place i've been too ends up with that in the final stages.

if you just need a limiter for tracking but need coloration go with uad-1 plugs..or psp vintage warmer is my favorite plug i own. test it for free from their site.

"The One And Only" would have to be Waves L3. It's amazing. If you want "Top Notch" but need to save on CPU cycles, the L2 is literally great. The L1 is not bad, either, and takes up very little overhead.

I thought I knew what to expect when I tried the L3 Ultramaximizer (or whatever it's called). Instead, it works in a way that's different. The first stage is sort of a "black box" in which we can't see what's happening, but we can sure hear it. Then it has sound-shaping tools a little bit like the Linear Phase Multiband. The L3 is definitely one of the greats.

I don't think there's any "one and only". Different limiters for different applications. They all sound different to a degree and it depends on the result you're after.

All of the ones mentioned are worth it, but not all of them work for every kind of track or mix.

+1 on that. UAD Precision Multiband is also pretty excellent once you get the feel of the interface.

If you already have Waves L2, maybe not. Vintage Warmer really is a different kind of animal - coloration versus transparency of the precision limiter.

I have the precision limiter, it's great. But, nothing can compare to the L3 Multimaximizer. It's much more musical in that it only limits stuff that's peaking. In other words, in doesn't squash the entire mix just because something in the midrange (or low or highs) is sticking out.

It really is the ultimate.
