hi,
I would like to ask if anyone can tell me if there is a difference between these MOTU interfaces other than the obvious (number of I/O etc). I am talking about the quality of conversion, preamps...:
828mkII
Ultralite
Traveler
Thanks!

I love my Traveler! Having 4 quality preamps built in is very convenient, that was actually one of its top selling points for me. Another was the 192 kHz sampling rate (although I'l probably never really utilize that until I upgrade my HDD). As for the sound: it seems on par with my BlueTube preamps, minus a little bit of color. If you really want to see if you'll like it go to a store and ask the sales guy to set one up - it's really not that difficult and if he's not lazy he'll do it for the sale.

P.S. - If you do get the Traveler, get the MOTU bag too. It's very high quality and has room for a laptop, the Traveler, and all sorts of cables and paperwork (it's got kind of a 3-way paper divider in one pocket). Plus it's made by OGIO.

thanks for the answer, greg!
the 4 preamps are what is attracting me on the traveler, but I am still thinking whether I should save a some money and go with 2 preamps on the interface and add high end preamps later. I have an offer to buy a 828mkII for about the price of a new ultralite, so I want to know if there is a reason to not get the "free" ADAT.

8 preamps!
I've been in doubt about getting a traveler, I'm glad I didn't buy one yet because now there is the MOTU 8pre. This suits me even better for location jobs and expanding the 828mkII in my stationary setup. It's been worth waiting for and I ordered one right away.

I think your choice should be dictated by your needs. If you need to make live recordings with the Traveler you can manage 4 mics and four other inputs for direct inputs from amps or outputs from external mixers.
If you're only doing home recording then you might not need to have 4 pre-amplified inputs.
