FW1884 and DP5???

Post by wavefadellc »

I am looking to use this combo and have heard on a couple forums that people had trouble getting this to work with the new 1.6 universal binary for the 1884. Can anyone verify that i can get this to work before purchasing DP5?

Thanks
Eddie

dunno about the UB matter - I am still on a dual G5 - but 5.1 works just fine with my Tascam unit.

…string theory says that all subatomic particles of the universe are nothing but musical notes. A, B-flat, C-sharp, correspond to electrons, neutrinos, quarks, and what have you. Therefore, physics is nothing but the laws of harmony of these strings. Chemistry is nothing but the melodies we can play on these strings. The universe is a symphony of strings and the mind of God… it is cosmic music resonating through 11 dimensional hyperspace.

I don;t have one of these (although I want one!). But I poked around the tascam user forum today and saw at least one thread that said:

-- the newer UB driver is great!

-- throw away the included firewire cable - it is crap!

Sorry I don't have a link, but google a little, this was in the FW1804 section. A intel mac mini owner was doing the "woe is me" thing, then halfway down the thread, said he got the newer driver and all was fantastic.

If you are really worried, I know some vendors will give you a Money Back Guarentee if it doesnt work for you.

ON EDIT -- FOund the link in my history:

http://tascamforums.com/index.php?showtopic=12087

see about midway down:
Everything is fine, the new drivers work great.

I'm recording again ..phew!

I have been using DP5.01 (that is not the UB) with the 1884 with NO Problems since DP 5 came out . Be sure you have the latest drivers from both tascam and MOTU. Recently, I have updated to the Mackie Onyx 400f (MUCH better preamps and AD conversion) and am currently using the 1884 only as a human interface. The combo is working flawlessly and is a joy to work with.

Well...on that same forum there is a post that is specifically about dp5 and the 1.6UB driver that states it doesn't work. That is where I draw my concern.

Sometimes OSX does odd things. Check to see if there might be an earlier version of the driver on your hard drive residing along side the 1.6 version. Also, check to see if there are another outdated files associated with the driver and remove them. When in doubt, remove everything and do a complete reinstall.

From there, no matter what the installer says, repair permissions and shut the computer down. Any old file associations can sometimes be stubborn to refresh themselves. Upon reboot, a new file association will be made to the one-and-only-latest version of the driver.

Be encouraged that those who have had trouble with this install have gotten it working.

Mind you, the thing is a bit like a spaceship, sooooo many buttons and things, I am only just now getting the hang of it. But everything works really well, and my kids are really impressed with the flying faders (I tell them its a ghost), so I guess it was worth the money. I sold off my 828mkI, a Motu MIDI time piece thingy and threw in some more money, I am really glad I made the move.
