Things I wish DP had list......

Post by tripit@earthlink.net »

I sure we all have a list of personal wants. I don't have much in want for DP, but after mixing in PT all weekend and coming back to mix in DP today, I realize that there are no peak holds on the meters. In PT you have peak holds and you can get a numerical readout of the fader level or peak. This feature is a must have on any professional DAW. I can't believe it's been looked over on DP. Or if I'm wrong and it's hidden somewhere, someone please point it out to me.

Not the same as metering in the mixer, but the Trim Plug In is a great meter too with peak indicators and the whole bit. Just instantiate it on whatever channel you need to meter.

Okay, for wishes... multiple outs for AU VI's. Essential.

As far as a multiple output "solution for 5.1 compatible AU plugs, take a look at this thread:

http://www.unicornation.com/ubb/ultimat ... 094#000010

I'm using this with Battery 2 and it's a great temporary work-around.

Concerning a future wish for DP... the ability to save custom FX presets INTO each individual effect's menu and open these up painlessly in any project.

I do wish they would remove the "intelligent" "you didn't hold that MIDI note long enough... I think I'll just hold it forever" feature.

maybe also the "Atmosphere Randomizer" "feature" could go as well.

1)
Named MIDI CCs. The XML .midnam file supports naming notes and CCs, but DP has the 10 or so most common ones hard coded:
volume
sustain
etc.

It'd be nice to know that CC 52 on my PodPro is wah pedal (don't know if that's the actual value)

2)
Maybe it's too old an issue now, but it would be nice if there was an easy way to import all my old Studio Vision pro sequences + audio files into new DP projects automatically

2 GREAT things the old Vision DSP had:

1. Assigniable velocity number to chunks of audio to govern output volume of that piec. Beats ahving to even stuff out with Trim, etc. Also allowed for quick adjustments to syllables within a word, while remaining non-destructive, and allowed for simple tweaks to levels in list mode.

2. You could set a window size and location on your screen and select "set default size and location". This made every window of it's type (list editor, seq editor, drum editor) open in the same way everytime, including NEW projects. For those of us not in love with consolidated windows, this would save alot of time not having to resize every new window of every new track all the time to fit our screens.

DP used to do that, too, way back when. Was quite handy, I agree. But I just use volume automation now, which is really about as fast.

My wish (in addition of course to multiple outs in AU's...):

I'd love to have the "scroll to selected track" feature also apply to the sequencer window: Select a track in the track window, the mixer in the left part jumps to the selected track (that's already there, as we know) AND the sequencer window jumps to the same track. That'd be sweet. :)

I agree with everything said about Vision DSP which still is a great program when you compare what it did and how it did it. I guess I knew it inside out and worked with it for years.

I'm giving DP a real go though - wish list includes:

1. A decent guitar pre-amp/modeller - don't mention PreAmp 1 which seems to have its fans (but not guitarists).
2. An easier mixer setup - having different mixers for each chunk drives me crazy. I only have one analogue mixer which I use for all music - so why do I need different ones for each chunk in DP? In Vision you had one mixer, but within each sequence (equiv to a chunk) you could record mixer settings so you were able to change things each sequence if you wanted to. With DP, every time you do something in a chunk, you go to the next chunk and all the settings are different (unless you manually set them to be the same). Vision was much easier to manage that function with.

Nixon72: There is sort of a way of doing what you want with the windows:

1) You can set up the windows the way you like, choose "Save As Template" and check the "Use for new projects" option. (I don't have it in front of me, so the language might be slightly off). This will make it so every new project will use that layout.

2) Save the window layout as a window set. Again, I don't have it in front of me, but I think it's the window menu, and you choose "Capture window" or something. Then, when you have it captured, you can call it up at any point and it will move your windows to that layout.

Hope that helps,
Hardin

Automation:

Global Update to end of mix button with a built in stop tape command ala SSL. This way you could set trims or hard writes/latches up then update them to the end without playing the damn song through 50 times. This is to save time right? Window line data bumps are inacurate and not audibly previewable as a trim on the fly where you are listening to the mix, yea?

Mutes active from automation IN Solo mode and writable.

A mute group system with a preview button and (8) setups. An (automation ready solo group button) to write them into automation on command.

Input controls ON THE FADER for IO's with VU's when record ready selected and
L/R split knob feature for stereo balances when applicable.

Thanks

That's the big request! I agree.
Also, more preference settings ex: have speaker icon on, with MIDI scrubbing turned off. Who needs to hear their MIDI backwords (rewind).
How about auto-naming tracks from dragging a sound bite into it (PT).
iMac 27" Retna 4GHz, Apollo 8 w/Satellite, NI K-88 controller, plus a ton of VI's.
