WOE! DP 4.6 & Higher, Design Flaw, MIDI Drops & Lag

Post by Adam Arfaras »

I can't believe it! I read a few posts about the MIDI in DP going down hill and it's all true! I'm using a 2G G5 dual proc. with 2.5 Gigs of ram a MTP AV and I'm experiencing drops an lags all over the place. Especially when I set any type of looping. I've been around since Opcode & KCS. Now here I am in 2006 with DP 4.6, Mach Five, Reason, Yamaha ES8 all hooked into a MTP AV and every song I have sounds timid and unstable at different points, each time I play it back! I'm plagued by subtle little MIDI failures . But when I import the same MIDI files into Reason and play them there, it's all smooth. This is a show stopper that MUST be fixed! I've done some amazing things with Digital Performer, this on the other hand is shockingly unacceptable. And, if it's not fixed P.D.Q., you'll see the DP community leaving in droves.

Adam,

I agree that any MIDI bugs do need to be sorted out, but you'll need to be more specific if you want them to look at it.

Can you post a list of the bugs, including how to replicate them, when they are most likely to occur etc. and then people on the forum can test for them on their own systems. There is a plausible theory going round that it could be related to OSX's core-MIDI. Unfortunately it generally turns out to be more complicated than 'the MIDI doesn't work properly', because it's usually due to a combination of hardware+driver+OSX version etc. MIDI is running perfectly well on my DP 5.1 system on non-MOTU MIDI devices.

Here's hoping we can help you isolate the problems - because that's the only way we can even get MOTU to look at it.

Thanks Mr. Clifford,

It's really most noticeable when I set loops. Nothing extravagant, just 5 or 6 tracks and it starts dragging and lagging at different places during playback. I keep everything updated. I never have any problems mastering out 16-32 audio tracks @96k with plug ins. I only see this problem while arranging with the MIDI features in DP 4.6. I never experienced it in 2.7 or even 4.5. I don't usually use MIDI and audio at the same time unless I'm mixing MIDI tracks down to stereo audio files.

I appreciate what you're saying about the variables & possibilities that could be at the root of the problem. I have seen quite a few posts out there stating the same sorts of things. I've been using DP for years now. I'm not brilliant by any means, but I have got a pretty decent grip on the program. In any event, I'm grateful to you and/or anybody else taking a look at the problem, I would like to continue to being a proud DP user.

Thanks Again
