On a particular song I'm editing, the I-beam tool I'm using for selecting part of a soundbite automatically snaps to grid. How do I turn this off?

That was it. The global and event list filters were turned off. Why isn;t this in the manual? It would have saved me 10 days!!! arggggghhhhhh !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
