I am using an external firewire drive- 7200rpm.
Everything was fine with Panther and 4.12.
I just order a 1g stick of ram-- we'll see how that goes.

Fwiw- I've been having the same problem, except I'm still using 4.12 and I was trying to get my iBook to talk to a Motu Fastlane, and everytime it would crash DP. I couldn't even get the driver installed properly into my iBook. I fear it may be time to upgrade to Tiger and 4.6.
