I had a recording session that kept crashing. Not sure exactly why but I was recording my band - 12 audio tracks and one MIDI. 96k. Buffer 1024. One thing I noticed, even before any information was being recorded the MIDI channel on the level meter from the Tracks Overview window, kept filling up. You know, it kept showing signal, rising and falling.
Now I’ve been recording the MIDI track without being connected to a device. When linked to a VI like Ivory II or Keyscape there’s a lag. On playback it’s clearly behind. If I record the MIDI where it ISN’T also playing an instrument it lines up perfectly.
I noticed this on Sierra DP 9.51. So it might be different. Now I’m on Mojave and DP 10.
But I’m thinking that this MIDI behavior led to the crashing.

Is this correct MIDI recording behavior?

For one, make sure you controllers and other devices aren’t sending data such as active sensing. Also, use a lower buffer for tracking and higher buffer sizes for playback and editing. That should reduce latency during recording MIDI data.

You’re talking about MIDI tracking, right? I use high buffer for both recording and playback since I hardly ever worry about latency. I don’t use much MIDI any more. That’s why I’m confused. Lol.
This is a full jazz band. 10 mics on the drums, 1 upright bass, three guitar, two from a keyboard recording audio and a MIDI track. That’s why I just record the MIDI just getting the data. No latency issues since he and we are listening to the Yamaha MX88 keyboard.
