Thunderbolt: no FW adaptors (or any for that matter) yet?

Makes one stop and think...

Thanks to Timeline (who's thunk the think) I've changed the topic title. This is not good.

Well, I have Thunderbolt, and I'm still thinking...The Sonnet Allegro, which was due this summer, seems to have disappeared off the Sonnet website and radar. Still waiting. I have too damn many FW devices I still need to contend with, and people keep telling me I just have to wait. How long?

Can't you run firewire off the Thunderbolt connector.

With an adapter that apparently does not exist:

This used to be on the Sonnet website, but is no longer there.

psst! know any one who can get me one?

I had no idea adaptors hadn't arrived yet. OK, I've stopped thinking about ANYTHING that doesn't have an 800 FW port. I'll change the topic title in a minute.

That really sucks!

At this point, the only peripheral I've seen that's available for Thunderbolt is the 27" Apple Cinema display. It also has a FW800, a few USB ports and a thru port built into the display.

Here's the Sonnet stuff:

Magma also has a chassis in the works.

edit: The TB display also has a gigabit ethernet port, so I guess they're going after the total dock solution included in a great display.

They used to have the Allegro in this page. No longer there. Lacie announced a Thunderbolt external hard drive a few month ago. I've yet to hear about one in the real world, either.

Wonder what the holdup is? Maybe Jobs didn't thunk the think when they opted for this technology.

Any clues as the why this is a problem?

Beats me. I'm used to technology whizzing past me. This is the first time I've ever been in a technological holding pattern. With Apple, Intel, and now Sony (on their Vaios), you'd think this technology would have a little bit more momentum.

MacBook Airs don't have a FW port at all, now.

If you want to migrate from Leopard on your old Mac to Lion on your new MB Air, you'll either need a Time Machine backup, a cloned image of your old Mac, or an upgrade to Snow Leopard on the old Mac.

There's no thunderbolt to FW adapter to access the FW port on the old Mac (for Target Disk Mode...the best way), and Migration Assistant won't work over a network connection for migrating to Lion the "ancient" Leopard OS (which was shipping on Macs less than 2.5 years ago).

Seems kind of half baked.

They recently put out a Migration Assistant update for Leopard which may have fixed the network issue.

Yeah, I expected Belkin or some other company of that ilk would have put out a Thunderbolt to legacy hub.

Hey! You're right. Haven't had a chance to test it. Maybe they heard me whining.

OWC has said not to expect TB peripherals till early next year but many are working on them.

The 10.5.x Migration Assistant fix was released on 8/10. On 8/9, when I migrated my wife's system, I did it from a Time Machine backup. I would have had to go to another room to get a FW cable so I didn't bother with MA (my handicap makes that a very difficult task).

PCIe to FW cards are still out there.

The latest iMac and Mac Mini have both FW and FW800. The only TB equipped Mac that does not have FW is the MacBook Air.

I would think that everyone knows that a simple cable adapter is all you need to hook up FW400 devices to FW800. But just in case...

The new Mac Pros are expected to have both TB and FW800 like the iMac and Mini. They're rumored to be offering a 16 Core version, too but you didn't hear it from me - and I didn't hear it from anyone so nevermind...
