hd192 96 48 or 44.1

Post by mbmusic »

Just upgraded to mac pro from a g4. As I now have more cpu power and lots of hard drive space I was thinkin of using 96khz as a defult sample rate fro new projects. Is there a real audible difference between 96 and 44.1 (My old default)
What should I be listening for. I look forward to all of your wisdom
thanks

There is, but they make for large files that will likely be squashed down to 44.1 or mp3 anyway. 88.2 is often chosen over 96 because of dithering by a round factor of two lowers the risk of anomalies.

More significant, imho, is the bit depth when recording vocals or real instruments. 24bit has made the most important differences in sound for the better from all I've seen and heard.

For virtual instruments, there is no benefit since most of them deliver at 44.1/16 and fewer of them are designed for 48/24.

For all else, the best thing to do is to run some tests. Record at all available sample rates and compare. Then bounce to 44.1/16 and compare the results from each. If mp3s are of concern, compress the mixes to various bps to hear what appeals the most to you.

One question to ask yourself-- and a simple one at that: can you hear the difference between 48k, 96k, and 192k? The answer may be yes or no, but it's important to understand why one uses certain settings.

I still think bit depth makes the biggest difference. Higher sample rates can present diminishing returns depending upon circumstances.

Yes, again what Frodo said.

In my personal experience there was a huge difference going from 16 bit to 24 bit.

Most of my recording is done at 48k 24-bit nowadays, because that is what most video applications use.

I always use 48/24 myself but i have noticed a difference when recording quality acoustic instruments like violin or good acoustic guitars at 88/24 but for rock or pop music 44 or 48 is the norm but as Mr frodo has stated bit depth is the key.
I always record at 24 bit even for demo's and dither down to 16 for burning CD's.

CD i believe would sound a lot better if they were all 44/24
Creativity, some digital stuff and analogue things that go boom. crackle, bits of wood with strings on them that go twang

thanks, I think I will make 48/24 my new default and experiment with 88.2/24 for special acoustic intruments projects

The power of instant intonation on a guitar, is TOTALLY underestimated..

Thats harsh. maybe they should have sprung the extra cash to bring a real keyboard player on the tour.

It show how professional that thy really are. It would have thrown many a band and they would have stopped and regrouped, but they went on just as if they were right on key, Very professional stage performance. I am sure they have had problems on stage before and "rolled with the punches" :D
I am sure it was embarrassing though.

I think probably many thought Eddie just screwed up because they did not know any better.
