Project unreadable with DP9.52 but fine with 9.02
Hello.
I'm so glad I found a solution to open what I thought was a corrupt old DP project that refused to open. It's from 10 years ago.
So, every time I double clicked on it, DP kept telling me>
An error occurred while reading from the disk.
Project "xxxxx (with the full file pathway)" was not loaded.
Unreadable data was encountered while opening the file
I tried all of the following, and nothing worked>
- The Load command, while it showed me the project's chunks, it refused to load them as well.
- Safe-opening didn't help
- Deleted audio/Analysis files and still didn't open
- Compressed/decompressed full folder to no avail.
- Copied the project to my office computer, and it gave me the same error.
THEN, I tried opening it with DP9.02 instead of (9.51 or 9.52), and now it happily opens
It didn't find ANY of the old Waves plugin versions (even though I have the Mercury bundle), but I don't care. I'll be redoing most of it anyway.
Then I saved it normally in 9.02, and it opens fine in my main computer with 9.52.
Phew!
I wonder why? What can cause a project to be unreadable by the newest versions and readable by a slightly older one?
So it seems a good idea to always keep an old DP version installed, because this troubleshooting step was the last resort I could think of to rescue what I thought was lost!

One or more corrupt audio files can do it. If the audio imports into 9.52, that isn’t it, of course but, if that gives you grief, strip and rewrite the header (QT, iTunes, DSP-Q 4.4 etc.).
Otherwise, I’d be looking at an incompatible plugin.

Hi,
I'm having a similar situation with a file from 2012.
Do you mind expanding on the "strip and rewrite the header" item you mentioned as a possible fix? I'd like to pursue that, but not sure I understand how.
I'm running Mac os 10.11.6, Dp 9.51. Mac Pro Early 2009.
Thank you in advance for the help!
Jason

Re: Project unreadable with DP9.52 but fine with 9.02
Just confirmed. A DP file from 2007 would not open in 9.52 but opened 9.02. Once saved in 9.02 it then opened in 9.52.

Re: Project unreadable with DP9.52 but fine with 9.02
Isn't this just be a normal backward compatibility thing? 9.52 can't go back as far as the file in question, but 9.02 can.RROY wrote:Just confirmed. A DP file from 2007 would not open in 9.52 but opened 9.02. Once saved in 9.02 it then opened in 9.52.

Re: Project unreadable with DP9.52 but fine with 9.02
Not to hijack, but after spending four months with 9.52, I decided to go back to 9.02. Processor-hungry VIs can cause crackles and dropouts in 9.52 when playing live, not in 9.02, even when nothing else is loaded and playing, simple as that. Otherwise everything is the same, but I found it so annoying I went back. Perhaps it's because 9.52 is trying to analyze things while you play because of the pre-gen.
And....since I'm on High Sierra, every time I reboot I have to reauthorize DP 9.02. I now know my DP serial number by heart, but if I was away from the internet (laptop) I'd be dead in the water. I intend to plead with MOTU to at least keep 9.02 accessible even after 10.X comes out, and hopefully tweak it just a little to avoid the reauthorization bug, just in case this condition carries over.

9.52 crashes regularly on my system. 9.0 (02?) is rock solid.

Re: Project unreadable with DP9.52 but fine with 9.02
I'm on DP9.51 and am happily swimming along with multiple projects.
I am worried to say it, but I've had no crashes for a long time.
Maybe version 9.52 is the problem?
Also opening old projects with old Waves plugs is working here.

So anyone have input on the "strip and rewrite the header" item for helping load a possibly corrupt file?
Thanks!
Thanks!

I am running solid with DP9.52 under Sierra, including old Waves projects (at least the two I've tried of late).waterstrum wrote:I'm on DP9.51 and am happily swimming along with multiple projects.

Re: Project unreadable with DP9.52 but fine with 9.02
Based on my latest tests, I estimate that around 80% of my old projects (anything done prior to DP9) do NOT open with DP9.52.
They keep giving me the same error I described in the OP, so I must open them in 9.02, save them as such, and then they will open fine in 9.52.
Also, when I finally get to open them, most won't recognize ANY of the Waves plugins (despite me having now a much bigger Waves collection now). It just can't find the plugins... But they're right there!!
This does not fill me with confidence for even slight future-proofing of my projects (thank Tlaloc for stems!)
I've no idea what could be causing this. Especially since only a few of them open fine...

Re: Project unreadable with DP9.52 but fine with 9.02
I'm getting the same error when trying to open some old projects. Most of the files are in DP 5.11, some from 6.0x (I forget which version), and maybe even one from DP7.
I thought it was just that DP5.11 files won't open in 9.52, but some do open. In fact, one folder containing 33 versions of a DP Project file had no problems at all.
I haven't done detailed forensics, but off the top of my head, I can't think of any differences between the ones that do and don't open. I think they all have the same plugins, for example.
I don't have DP 9.02 [EDIT: It's available for download at MOTU.com], but I do have 8.07, and the problem files all open with that. Once I open and save in 8.07, DP 9.52 will open them without issue.
But there was another Project in this same album where all but one or two versions gave that error message.
I submitted a support ticket to MOTU and sent one of the Project files. Not surprisingly, they said they'll forward it to the developers, but "we do not get many users asking about opening DP5 files in DP9."
I hope those of you getting this error will tell MOTU.

Re: Project unreadable with DP9.52 but fine with 9.02
I think what Mike Halloran is suggesting is to open the individual audio file in a different program like QuickTime and do a Save As in a different format, or even in the same format, then reload that file into the Audio Files folder of your DP project. Right, Mike? There used to be a way to do a Get Info for an audio file and use some application to edit the header info, but that’s years back for me.jgarnerprod wrote:So anyone have input on the "strip and rewrite the header" item for helping load a possibly corrupt file?
