DSP Quattro 5 is out

Post by David Polich »

Pretty big update...finally 64 bit, lots of new
features and new GUI. $40 to upgrade from
a previous version.

Still the only worthy successor to the discontinued
BIAS Peak, which was truly the best Mac-based
audio mastering application ever. Forget about
the bloated, confusing Wavelab or feature-poor
Triumph or overpriced Sonic Studio.

The authorization process is still confusing but
Stefano will respond immediately if you email
him about any issues.

Go to pages 4 & 5 for a lively discussion of this and the hoops some of us have had to jump through during the upgrade process.

Yeah, the DSPQ 5 authorization process is
confusing. I emailed Stefano about it and he
answered straight away. My buddy Greg
(Waxman) had the same issues, emailed
Stefano and he answered Greg immediately
as well.

Spent more time with DSPQ5 yesterday.

Stefano knocked it out of the park. It sounds
better, the plugin effects implementation (u
could run over 150 plugins in a session) the
CD layout and authoring, ability to save and
load any audio format including 32 bit Float,
the new pitch shifting and time stretching,
all amazing. What really knocks me out is
how much better it sounds. Stefano rewrote
the entire app from the ground up, and it is
now easy to understand why it took him so long.

Highly recommended.

Great to hear that. I thought DSP 4 sounded good. I always opened up mix bounces in it to listen before deciding whether it was finished because it always seemed cleaner to me in DSP-Q than in anything else.

Just upgraded from version 4. Cool so far! Yes, the authorization process was a little bit involved, but all worked out. Here's a niggling little oddity. Why does the "Save..." option in the File menu have the ellipses (...) after it when it doesn't open any dialog but is the basic "Save" command? :)

Not sure why, James. You can email Stefano to ask.

BTW, there is already an update - version 5.0.3. Available in your UserArea at the DSP Quattro
website.

Haha. I’m pretty sure it’s just a mistake as it breaks with convention AFAIK. Ellipsis after a menu item pretty much always means there’s a subsequent dialogue box that will open. Still, it’s the kind of mistake that makes the person pointing it out look like a petty nitpicker. (Or OCD!) So I don’t want to email Stefano over something so trivial. :)

James is right about HUI guidelines regarding the ellipsis. It indicates that the command is not complete in and of itself, which usually infers a dialog will appear for setting or confirming parameters.

Does anyone happen to know how to open existing playlists from V4? I couldn't figure out a way to open or import them and I have hundreds of them I need access to. Luckily V4 still runs and I can get my work done. The new version is certainly more visually appealing but for a guy who uses V4 every day it feels like something from a completely different company. I hope I can open my old playlists somehow.

I don't think that is possible, at least from my understanding of the FAQ:

Thanks for the link, cuttime. I should have read up more before I purchased. Hard to believe there wasn't some way to import old playlists. Looking forward to the full manual to answer other questions.
