WIFI and iPhone hotspot over USB

Post by burn em »

I'm mid project so can't take my 17" MBP in to be repaired yet. It has a common problem where it can't detect the wifi card. This means I'm chewing up my monthly data allowance on my iphone. I can use the wifi at the studio on my iPhone fine.

What I'm wondering is:

If I have my iphone connected to my MBP with Personal Hotspot on and WIFI connected on my iPhone. Will My MBP use the WIFI connection through my iPhone or use the 3G conection for data?

I'm not sure what the answer is, but assuming your WiFi is faster than 3G, you could go to http://speakeasy.net/speedtest on your MBP and run the test there and if you get a speed faster than possible with 3G you'll be able to assume you're using WiFi.

Cheers James. Lateral thinking triumphs again!

From much Googling it seems a mac can't use the wifi connection of an iPhone to connect to a wifi network. I'll try and verify with your' suggestion.

Hmm. That would seem to make sense. I wonder if you can if you tether to the iPhone via Bluetooth instead of WiFi. Does the MBP have Bluetooth built in?

The personal hotspot IS wifi, so if your MBP can't see wifi, it won't work using the iPhone.
