To some degree it seems people are taken in by:

1) the name with "pro" in the title (makes 'em feel like a pro);

2) the "big company" mentality (bigger is better).

It may also be that only 2 syllables is easier (Pro Tools; Log-ic; Cu-base) that 6 (Dig-i-tal-Per-form-er). Even the 3 syllable name gets better press (Gar-age Band).

Couldn't be THAT simple, could it?

If MN had a "Like" button, I'd click it.

Anyway, a quick possible dialog...

"Do you use Pro Tools?

"Why, yes...I'm a pro and so are my tools."

I know it could be phrased better, but it's a continuing long day!

Client: Do you use protools?

Me: No way, I prefer higher end stuff. I use Digital Performer. But I can give you a protools session when we are done making great music and then if you ever need it, which I assure you that you won't, you'll have it.

I have a friend who wrote to me and asked me what he should buy: ProTools or Logic. DP wasn't even part of the question. I immediately urged him to avoid logic right off the bat (he's a rock and roll guy... traditional sort of rock music) as being convoluted. He heard that from other people. I told him about DP, but in the interest of disclosure, I gave him the advice I give everyone: "Are you planning on collaborating with another musician or studio (for drum tracking for example) and what do THEY use?" Well, the guy he was planning on exchanging projects with, etc. was Pro Tools. :(

As a pro, I use both PT and DP regularly. I usually use PT when I am hired to work in other studios, but I choose to use DP in my own studio, or alongside PT in commercial studios. (PT still has some features I can't find elsewhere)

I have to admit, I love them both. Great creative tools. I use them in different ways.... rather like I might reach for a Fender versus a Gibson, or a piano versus a Hammond. For me PT acts as a great multitrack, with strong editing facilities. DP is a wonderful totally integrated system, especially for 'in-the-box' work-flow.

I also have Logic, which has its own strengths, but I prefer to have it just so I can interface with others.

Embrace them all I say..... cheap at ten times the price........ (twenty years ago I budgeted for my own mix-room.... scary prices, glad I didn't go there!)

Warmest wotnots,

Stephen

For instance:

My current project.... recorded on 24tk analog, orchestra recorded at Abbey Road in ProTools, guitar overdubs have been done in Logic, a lot of my signal processing has been done in DP, and all ending up in ProTools (96k), output through 32 channels of Prism into an SSL for mixing. And on to half inch. It's all great.

Oh, and my previous project was sent to me in Logic, but I transferred it into DP and mixed it in the box. Both projects sound wonderful.
