Need a MOJO compressor
OK, I'm tired of plug ins...
I need some MOJO going in.. any suggestions?
I'm thinking a FET comp, and already have RNC , ART VLA Pro. API 500 module is prefered, but rack set up is cool. All around general use tracking comp with some iron.
Lemme have it !

Are you tracking with plugs? I don't understand. No plug is good to track with they are post. UA LA-610 MKII is nice for a general pre-comp.Tonio wrote:OK, I'm tired of plug ins...

Tracking w/ plugs ? No way. Compressing after the fact just ain't cutting it
LA610mkii eh ? hmm I've heard good things about it. More of an channel strip. Might be the way to go, it even has EQ no? I'll check it out.
Allthough a pre w/ tube optical comp and EQ is enticing, the whole concept of a opto tube comp may be the trick for some warm distortion vs a FET. It is a different character. I'm not getting much out of the VLA (I doubt it would compare to the LA610), but it just seems to chop the high end and gets mushy. Not sure if I want to go with a channel strip vs a dedicate comp.
With a FET comp w/ some nice transformers, would'nt I get more harmonic 2nd order distortion? I suppose the actual unit and source would make a difference.

It appears the LA610 is a pre/comp.

Re: Need a MOJO compressor
I know you said general use tracking---but what will it be focusing on? You mentioned an API 500-series module would be preferred, I take it you have a Lunchbox or something? If so, what modules do you have? What mic(s) as well? And well, what budget?
Thank you,

Re: Need a MOJO compressor
I don't know if Anthony DeMaria is still in business, but one of the nicest comps I've ever used is my ADL SCL 1500. Great for tracking and great as a final 2-bus comp. Sweet and punchy with a definite vibe to it. I've had this one about 10 years now.
If you want a similar sound for less money - check for a used JoeMeek SC2 (original version with the output volume on the back). It's pretty damn close the the ADL sound. I have one of those too and I like it a lot on acoustic guitar. You can get a ton of squeeze without it feeling squeezed.
Of the 2, the JoeMeek is a bit darker up top...but just a bit.

In general looking for some color character with dynamic control for a few tracks. NOT for avoiding clipping the converters.BradLyons wrote:I know you said general use tracking---but what will it be focusing on? Could be lead instruments(sax, trumpet, flute, piano, percussion < yes percussion can be a lead instrument>-any solo instruments ) or backing tracks(bass, gtr, percussion, horns). I do get that from my VLA, but its gets too muddy quick, and kills the top end. The RNC is nice that its transparent with dynamics, but obviously lacks any character.
Yes I do have API LB. In my signature you can see I have A Designs P-1's. Though it is hidden in there, I'll revamp my convoluted signature soon
Also Grace 101, and Soundcraft SX 20 ch mixer for pre's.
Mics:
Dynamics- SM57, BEYER M201, M160, Senn e609, 421mkii x2, Audix D2 x2 EV MD 409
SDC- SM81x2, Audix TR40, GT 44
LDC- 414BULS, C3000B, AT 4050
I do plan to work on the LDC, and possibly SDC cabinet.
Budget: @1200ish.
I do multi track individual instruments - usually 1 clean and 1 with a comp or contrasting mic/pre config to play around in the mix.
Thanks !!

Re: Need a MOJO compressor
The DAKING FET2COMP is absolutely worth a look.... another option, although more money, is the GERMANIUM COMPRESSOR from CHANDLER. If you're looking for slamming compression with that "iron" sound---these will blow your mind.

Thanks Brad, honestly I've been looking at the BAC 500 and Chandler Little Devil.

Re: Need a MOJO compressor
OH DUH, YOU SAID 500-series module...I completely forgot about that, or I would have mentioned it. Yeah, that module is impressive---and definitely has that transformer sound. ONE thing--how old is your LUNCHBOX, assuming that's what you have? I say this because in 2007 (or was it 2006?)...they changed the power transformer in there to increase the available current for modules such as this level.
Thank you,

As far as I know the Daking FET 2 is still in production, there is a new FET3

Re: Need a MOJO compressor
You Want the mojo and the iron in spades, get an original DBX160 VU, there is nothing like it for bass, kick, sn.
Just putting a signal through this thing without ANY compression at all changes the sound for the better.
