Anyone in/from/familiar with Atlanta?

Post by Mr. Quimper »

Just throwing this out there since we have 'cornies from all over.

I've decided that once my lease is up and I finish my Master's this coming spring, I'm going to move up to Atlanta. It's an easy move being only 4 hours away and there's really nothing for me or my fiancee to do in Savannah besides crappy McJobs (she and I both have 4-year degrees and are working in a coffee shop and supermarket, respectively).

I'm just wondering if anyone has lived there or knows the area enough to suggest anything I should see/do, or any places I should try to apply to/intern at. My specialty is in post, but I've got video editing, graphic design/web design chops, etc and certainly wouldn't sneeze at anything that would allow me to pay off my loans and move beyond jobs that are essentially the same as what I was doing in high school.

Not looking for any favors, just curious if anyone here is at all familiar with the area and if they have any advice to give.

Thanks.

You might check out Oz magazine's Creative Index. It'll give you some phone numbers to start. You might also check the local AIGA chapter.

Are you currently studying at SCAD? They have a branch in Atlanta. You might be able to make some contacts there that could give you some leads. I don't know how the politics are around there. They may be more loyal to their own branch grads, but it might be something to look into(if that is your situation).

Hi, rcannonp, thanks for the reply!

It is my situation, but I doubt they'd be loyal to their own graduates, at least in my case since they don't currently have a sound or music program. :P

I'll certainly check out those links, though. Thanks again! :D

I moved here from Miami about ten years ago. There is a fair amount of work to be had but it can be all over the map. It actually helps to have a diverse background and be good at wearing a lot of hats.

I've got a good friend who is the director of education for the SAE Institute here. I know they need a live sound specialist at the moment.

My wife worked at CNN for years and they used to need folks on occasion. There is a lot of work here, but a great deal of it is contract work these days.

good luck,
Wayne
