What is wrong with my 828?!?!?!?!?!

Post by shniggens »

Allright, this is really starting to anger me . . .

I JUST TURNED MY MOTU 828 ON, AND IT'S ALREADY CRASHED!!!!!!!

What I thought was overheating issues, seems to be something more serious.

THe MOTU just hung, the LCD is twitching, most of the output faders dissappeared, and the letters "niaG" are displayed on the LCD.

What the heck??!?!?!

So "niaG" is just Gain backwards. Why is this thing acting so silly?

Does anyone rely on these things in a live situation? That would be scary . . .

Mine has worked flawlessly since day 1.. Studio and on stage.
Did you try
a) swapping the firewire cable
b) performing the machine reset per MOTU's website
c) actually calling MOTU as its probably a pretty good chance youve simply got a bad unit?

You also dont list anything about the system youre running it on..
If you want help you gotta help us too.

Exactly the same thing has happened to my unit. i've had it for just over a year and have had no problems whatsoever, then all of a sudden any auidio playback (regardless of what software i'm using) is plagued by dropouts and glitches. eventually, it crashes altogether with the display flickering the word, 'niaG', just like you said.

shniggens, have you managed to resolve this problem? if so, can you please tell me how! i'm in a real panic! i've tried my 828mkII with two different Powerbook G4 computers (one running OS 9 one running OS 10.3) and the problem persists. i've also tried resetting to factory defaults but this doesn't help either.

any help would be greatly appreciated!

Same thing with mine. Started happening when I added a Eureka and updated mac OSX to 10.4.11 - I'm running a MacPro with DP 5.11. It's also happened in the past, but not for a while until today. Hooray!

Hi all,

Regretfully I am adding mine to this list. I just registered to do that.

What the heck is "niaG"?

I have 5 MOTU audio interfaces and 2 MOTU MIDI units, and their support staff have not even cared to reply to my support requests.

That is my payment for being a good customer.

Please, if somebody knows how to fix this niaG thing, I will be very grateful.
We know who's in and who's not.

I sold my 828 Mk II on eBay recently and the guy who bought it just wrote me bitching about the EXACT same problem a few minutes ago - so I came here to start a new thread about it and was horrified to find this one.

It was working perfectly up through the day I sold it, even recorded some guitar parts for a song the day before I shipped it!

The buyer is really being a threatening jerk to me because he wrongfully thinks I sold him a defective unit - which I would never do. Now he's demanding a refund but I think MOTU should own up to this.

I'll be calling MOTU tomorrow during business hours and I'll let you guys know if they are of any help. I refuse to pay for their manufacturing mistakes.

The eBay buyer wrote me back and let me know that he fixed the problem by changing the driver setting in his DAW. He didn't go into more detail than that, and I don't even know if he runs Mac or PC.

Any of you who are having this problem should try installing the latest drivers, etc. Sounds like a software issue.

Try resetting your 828mkII and see if that fixes it:

http://www.motu.com/techsupport/technot ... 89976/view

Follow these steps to restore the 828mkII to Factory Default Settings.

Disconnect the firewire cable from the 828mkII
Press the Setup knob
Turn the Setup knob all the way to the right
Press the Select knob
Press the Value knob
Power off the interface and plug the firewire cable back in
Power the interface back on.

-----
If it doesn't call motu tech the first thing in the morning when they open up Eastern Time. You have to get up before the californians roll out of bed.

If worse comes to worse, MOTU repairs these units for a flat fee of about $100.00 or less.
