Broken Knob on front of 896?
Hi all. I have an original 896 interface and the gain knob on channel 3 has stopped working and I am trying to figure out how much it would cost to repair?? Basically all the other knobs give a bit of resistance when you turn them, but this one does not. I am pretty sure it is just the switch/knob as the channel still works when you feed it a fixed line in. Any help ont he matter would be great.
Hi,
You may want to check out the recent thread:
"2408 vol control bad?"
Not sure if it's the same deal, but it would make sense if they used a similar grade of parts. The 896 pot could even be a more common variety.
FWIW- As people in that thread have mentioned, I too think 80 dollars or whatever for the 2408 pot is a bit steep for a part which might even cost an end user 10 dollars, let alone a massive bulk order. Add to that the fact that the number of failure posts here on our's would indicate that it probably isn't even a good quality part, and thus would cost even less, plus your shipping, plus the loss of your interface for an indeterminate amount of time, plus the fact that it could be considered a "design flaw" or poor choice of parts, which some manufacturers might feel obligated to remedy at a minimal or much lower cost for the customer, plus the prospect that if the repair doesn't involve any part upgrades or fixes, it would merely put you back to what you had, which may or may not hold up very long.
If it is a similar problem, I'd recommend finding a friendly local tech., and explaining to him/her that you just need a front panel volume pot replaced, and see if they can offer you a quote. Maybe opening the unit yourself, and taking it in to show them what they're up against would get you a decent price.
Take Care!
George
PS- I'm assuming you are: A) not still under a warranty and eligible for a free repair, and B) not interested in trying to replace it yourself

thanks for the info
Thanks for writing me back. I really hope it doesn't cost $80 for a new knob! I will see what I can come up with locally.
