hi all,

I'm a french user who want to buy in a few days digital performer and a brand new G5.

My question is:

What can i expect about digital performer 4.61 with a G5 2X2ghz?? How many MIDI tracks, audio tracks, and virtual instruments?? I learnt that "DP" is more CPU consuming than for exemple Logic Pro.

I know that this question is a little bit difficult to answer but i really need to know if i will work worrying.

Yes Logic is more efficient with the VI's but sucks in the audio department.....No where near as easy to work with as DP

Yes, you are right that this is a hard question to answer since there are many variables that influence performance. Things like:

1. Sample rate
2. Configured buffer settings (lower settings equal higher CPU, but less latency)
3. What VI's you plan to use
4. Hard drive speed and whether the drive is dedicated to tracking

And, to a lesser extent:

4. RAM installed (more RAM allows for less paging).
5. Your audio interface (PCI vs Firewire) and the efficiency of its driver

There are people using DP on a 2x2 G5 with no complaints. And, I'd also bet there are people in the "Optimize MAS" thread that own a 2x2 G5. So, yes, it all depends on what your typical projects look like and how that G5 and DP is configured.

I have a dual 2.7 G5 and I'm sure that even it will max out when running 96/24 with small buffer size and a few Reactor plugins with complex patches instantiated (though, I've never tried this).

I plan to buy a G5 2x2.3ghz with external hard drive and 2 or 3 gigas of RAM. I use to play with approximatly:

7 or 8 Virtual instruments and 16 audios tracks. Do you think this configuration will be right for this kind of project?

Unless you are running a very low buffer (say 64 or 128) you will be fine.....
