My Kingdom for Assignable Mute Buttons

Is there a way to assign a MIDI note to a mute button? I've tried creating my own Console but I can't seem to figure out how to assign a note from my drum machine to a mute button on the mixer. Idealy, I woud like to trigger many mute buttons at once(you know, as one can do on a real mixer). I can do this with Reason all day long. Is this possible in DP4.12 without shelling out major dinero for a HUI?

Thanx,

Hello I can't help with the assignable MIDI button.

One thing come to mind.
You could use the groups.
You'll have to create a custom group and select only "play enable" in the custom window.
This way, with one click, you mute or play all the grouped tracks.
Hope that helps

same here. i tried this in 3.11, called motu and they were no help. mutes are a huge part of hip hop production ( my bread and butter) and not being able to do it in DP SUCKS!!! i havent tried it in 4.6 because i simply gave up on it. is there anyone out there who can help?

...calling magic dave??? :D

Pretty much the same here. I love doing hip hop / rap, and mutes are not a problem. Using a mouse and automation gets it done. FAST, I might add.
An external controller would be nice for doing it but is not a requirement at all.
Learn to use the softwares abilities and you will be surprised with what you can do.
In the mix window hide the tracks you don't need to mute. Then arrange the rest of the tracks in a logical order for dragging across with the mouse for muting purposes. Works great. And you can always rewind a couple of times to get it just right if you have to. Automation is easy to work with and edit in this program.

in theory i agree with you but it kinda takes away from the spontinaity and vibe. yeah i have ti go through and automate and all of that but its faster and more intuitve to have your finger on the trigger so to speak. its an extra step and it sucks that thats how im forced to work. i love DP and really thats my biggest beef with it. its not like mutes are an "advanced feature" why cant they just include it on an update?

Well I'm sittin' here with 2 ProMix 01's as my main hands on interface and MOTU doesn't have a way to make the 2 communicate back and forth.

I can use the 2 PMixes to move all the faders on the screen but there is no way to have them respond and move the PMix fader when I move the onscreen fader. I've asked and tried making custom consoles in DP to no avail.

So... I just live with it and hope that MOTU's dogs bark and run off the AVID salesman when he comes around. :P :P :P

In a world of sellouts I'll starve before becoming one.

Mackie control and other surfaces do mutes very well.

But outboard mixers, unless they are HUI emulators have problems.

There is a way to control mixers, though. I set it up before using an 03D as my mixer and all was okay. It took a little programming with the console because the mutes respond to MIDI on the mixer. I think each mute is a separate MIDI command. But I understand you want the mixer to control DPs mutes.

A cool workaround within DP is to use the Mute Tool (in the tool palette) to mute MIDI or Audio data. Just click on what you don't want to hear and it silences that data (it will be greyed out, not erased). If the part you want is in the middle of a soundbite or MIDI note, just use the scissors to cut where the mute should begin and end, and then mute. Sometimes this muting approach is actually more intuitive than a mixer or even the mix window. Works especially well in the Sequence window with all tracks displayed.

Okay, first off, using a mouse aggravates my carpal tunnel. Having to do 32 seperate mute tracks one-at-a-time compounds the problem by several orders of magnitude.

Secondly, yes, it is a vibe thing. I'm a drummer. I like to have huge blocks of tracks from which I can loop for hours and carve away at using multiple mutes. This is particularly crucial in a live setting whilst jammin' with my crew. I can't predict what other players are going to do or where the tune is going••”nor would I want to. Immediate live control is essential. It is Digital "Performer" after all.

I can only speculate that the reason this feature was excluded was to sell HUI compliant interfaces. I wonder what MOTU's cut is?

Well, that's a nice unit. But I already have a bunch of perfectly wonderful controllers. Buying another device cuts into my upgrade budget. At this point, I'm considering competitive upgrades. Sorry MOTU, but, if you can't deliver what I consider essential functionality, you force me to make a Logical decision.

i talked to motu today. there is no way to do it. period. end of sentace. they also said it's highly unlikely that it will be a "fix".

thanks motu... screw you too.

i find it insulting that motu wants me to spend $1000 to be able to use mutes in the most common manner.

Well, before you jump ship...just make sure Logic can do the muting thing.

Maybe what you need is a touch-screen. Then you could just go crazy with the mute buttons.
