how noisy are your G5 fans?

Post by KarlSutton »

I've looked around the apple forums about this & I have taken my G5 DP1.8 (first generation) in for service mulitple times - no matter what I'm doing - surfing the net, rendering in FCP or running a large DP session, my fans run like crazy. My studio is always 75-77 degrees. If I set a regular fan in front of the computer they calm down.

My question is this, are the newer G5's like this? Is there something I can do to calm them down without adding more noise to my studio with an external fan?

Last part of the question, does anyone here have any experience with the ISO boxes that are made to house noisy computer gear?

Thanks, Karl

I've been working on the dual 2.0 and it's very quiet. In fact, I've had to wrap my hand around the back to feel if the fans are running. Very nice! Wasn't there some patch regarding the fans running full tilt all the time on some of the first gen G5's?

Hey Karl,

My G5 2.0 used to sound like a jet engine until I got a firmware update from the Apple store. See if one is posted online.

I'm running Tiger on a dual 2.0 and it's mostly quiet. Then I put Panther on a second HD in order to run DP4.12. The fans go crazy until I log out!
