ULTRALITE MK3 Hybrid - Sonoma 14 Issues

I have been seeing similar issues to others on the forums with instability but also a serious crash on my Intel MBP 16 which fried the logic board.
  • Sonoma 14.4.1
Latest KEXT driver installed for MOTU cards - Mac v89555 | Oct. 13, 2021
    Ableton 12
Arturia and Stock Ableton Plugins in the session
Tried to wire up the unit with a USB2 cable going into a USB-C adaptor to my thunderbolt port on the side of the MBP.

Setup Ableton to point to the device, which was recognised and the motu app popped up saying it was connected successfully. Setup samples to 256.

Attempted to press play on a session in Ableton, machine halted, red screen of death and then the machine refused to start up after this.

I just got the machine back from Apple here in Australia and the logic board had to be replaced on the unit.

The machine was working fine with a SSL2 USB-C interface hours before so there is nothing wrong with the MBP, Ableton or any plugins or devices I was using in the session.

I have raised this with MOTU support as well and given them all the information they asked for and have got no reply back in a few weeks now. Just worried about using the interface again if this could potentially happen again.

Has anyone else seen issues like this?

I've never heard of anything like this.

I suspect the cable adapter. You can buy what's called a USB Printer Cable — these support USB 2/1.1 only as required by CoreAudio on a Mac. These are available in all configurations — you will want one with a USB-B plug on one end and a USB-C plug on the other. Yamaha and other companies are recommending these as a way to navigate the hot mess known as USB-C.

The cable and unit worked fine on the M2 so its not the cable. I have a USB-C to Usb-B printer cable as well and that was working fine also pre sonoma 14.

Ok… Your OP stated this:

Did Apple give an opinion as to the cause of the problem?
