Mac randomly shuts down with UltraLite MK4 connected after installing Pro Audio driver v91429

TL;DR: Has anybody else had random Mac shutdowns (with cause -3 "Multiple temperature sensors exceeded the defined limit" since installing MOTU Pro Audio v91429 from June 21, 2022?

I've had my Mac Pro 2019 and UltraLite MK4 a couple years. Beside the horrible lag problem that made it impossible to monitor live analog inputs from the MK4, it worked OK. I'm currently running macOS 11.6.
Last month I saw MOTU Audio driver version 91429 was released in June, which was supposed to fix the lag problem. It did! But every since then my Mac Pro has shut down randomly every few hours with code -3 "Multiple temperature sensors exceeded the defined limit." I cleaned out the computer and fans as I do every 3-6 months. I ran Apple's diagnostic. It said everything was fine. TG Pro has had no abnormal fans reading this whole time.
I tried installing macOS 12 on an external drive. The Mac worked fine again. A few days later I installed my favorite virtual synths, DP11 and the audio driver version 91429. Again the Mac started shutting down without warning every few hours, even when just idle.
I saw there was an update to macOS 11, so I went back to that version and installed the update. It still shut down randomly.
Last week we had a power outage that lasted 6 hours. When the power came back on, my Mac worked fine. it worked fine for days. No more random shutdowns. I was mostly using it for Web pages and listening to music with my Airpods. Then i realized when the power went out the UltraLite MK4 shut down and I never turned it back on. I turned it back on and had 2 random shutdowns within 5 hours, just viewing Web pages. The UltraLite has been off the last few days and I haven't had anymore random shutdowns with code -3.
Has anybody else experienced anything like this? I have a ticket in with MOTU.

You're doing everything right but something is getting in the way.

I'll assume that you've tried resetting the NVRAM and SMC. This is a bit of a Hail Mary but I would reset the Launch Services to Default to eliminate that as a cause.

Reset Launch Services

1. Open Terminal and run these commands:

2. /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -seed -lint -r -f -v -dump -domain local -domain system -domain user -domain network <Enter or Return key>
3. killall Dock <Enter or Return key>
4. sudo mdutil -E / <Enter or Return key> (enter Admin password when prompted, then <Enter or Return key>)

5. Restart your Mac

Lots of things can be interfering. If the above doesn't do it, you have to find the culprit. The Activity Monitor, diligence and patience are normally your best friends. Suspect anything from Corel except Toast — there's a background process that causes lags and the only way to eliminate it is to disable SIP and purge everything with Corel in the name. They've been informed and have done nothing.

When diagnosing, Find Any File.app can locate things that elude Finder/Find. It's shareware https://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/ so you can try for free. If you buy it from the App Store, update notifications are automatic.

I recently had a nasty conflict with an older CodeMeter Runtime (Antares, NI and others use this). I found it by going through every App, Extension and License to make certain that I was running the latest and greatest. Fortunately, AutoTune was in the As so it didn't take as long to find as it might.

I have to just add quickly that FindAnyFile is absolutely indispensable for me. I wish Apple's built-in "Find" worked like this. I use this almost exclusively now.

Oh... I just checked the site and it's still only $6!! Just get it. It's terrific!

Yes, I did reset the NVRAM and SMC. I should have mentioned that. I have not tried Launch Services. I'll try that tonight. Thanks.
So far MOTU has just asked me to run Apple's diagnostic, which I did previously. I believe I told them that. But I'll try that again and get back to them.
I need to look at the crash report better to, and maybe compare a few of them, which I haven't done yet. I've send some to Apple, but not to MOTU. Maybe they can make more sense out of it.
Thanks again!

As the description says: "A popular alternative to FAF is EasyFind by DEVONtechnologies. It offers a different search interface and has a single-window user interface which you might prefer. And it's free." I've use both and would agree. Also agree that the Find command in macOS is pretty useless.

I rebuilt launch services. I'm not going to call it fixed yet, but I've had my Mac on with the UltraLite plugged in for over 8 hours now. I don't think I made it more than 5 or 6 hours without the Mac shutting down before.
I would have never thought to do that since it shut off even with a fresh install of Monterey on a new drive, plus the MOTU software.
But I've been using DP 11 and other processor-intensive tasks and have had no problems. It used to die just sitting idle for a few hours.
I'll give it a few days, but I hope it is fixed.
Thanks for the help!

Yeah, I have FindAnyFIle and EasyFind. Spotlight has is purposes, but I don't use it nearly as much as these other search programs.

I’m going to have to try EasyFind. I was unaware it.

Hallo,

i guess we got the same problems when using the "UltraLite" soundcard with macOS on the M1 with the latest drivers.

I did read your post and i guess that you will report back that the problem still exists even after the advise from other users here?.

If so, please check your latest Crash report after the kernel panic and look and see if the "USB driver" is mentioned? You'll find it some lines down in your report. Please check my post too, maybe we got the same problem with the drivers?

viewtopic.php?t=72465

kind regards

My problem wasn't fixed.
My computer stayed on all night, longer than ever before since the problem began, but then I turned it off before leaving. When I came back and turned it on, it shut down within an hour. I noticed some of the crash reports say MOTU Driver (they DO include mention of USB Driver) and other crash reports are MDS (Spotlight searching).
I disabled Spotlight searching. Instead of using a command like "Sudo mdutli – a -i off" I just dragged all my drives to the "Do not index" area of Spotlight.
It hasn't been 24 hours yet, but no more crashing so far. Not really a solution, since I use Spotlight even though I have other apps like EasyFind. If the Mac doesn't crash for a few days, I'm going to try enabling Spotlight search for a drive at a time and see how it goes. It could be the MOTU crashes and the MDS crashes are unrelated, but I have far more MOTU crashes than MDS and the computer has been on for at least 18 hours without crashing.

I don't know how to add one of those scrolling text boxes, so I'll just put my whole crash report in a reply.

Do you have any Microsoft Office installed? If so, what version and build? I have never seen this in a crash report without Office being installed.

Also from your crash report:
OS Version: macOS 11.6.8
Huh?

MOTU is showing this driver for your OS:

MOTU Pro Audio Installer
Version: 80789
Release Date: July 30, 2019
Supported Platforms
macOS 10.14, macOS 10.13, macOS 10.12, Mac OS X 10.11

What happens if you install that instead of this that does not include 10.11.x?

MOTU Pro Audio Installer
Version: 91429
Release Date: June 21, 2022
Supported Platforms
macOS 12, macOS 11

I do have Microsoft Office installed. Version 16.16.27 (201012) is what Excel says. I don't use the other apps.

I'm not sure why I should use MOTU Pro Audio driver version 80789. Isn't that really old? I have macOS 11 Big Sur, not 10.11.x. The pervious MOTU drives all worked fine with the UltraLite, except there was always such lag that I could never use the inputs while monitoring them. 91429 got rid of the lag, but that's when my computer started shutting down.

I re-installed Monterey on an external drive and it hasn't crashed all week like it did the first time I tried doing that. I am going through the painful process of installing and registering everything again as I need it, as I don't want to risk Migration Assistant adding something that makes it crash again. So far everything still works. I still wish I knew what the problem was though.

I need new glasses. You have the right driver.

As drastic as that sounds, sometimes, a clean install is the best way. When I had similar problems a few months ago, I went through everything bringing it up to date and found my two big problems. A clean install would have fixed the CodeMeter issue as I would’ve downloaded the latest runtime.

I would still have had the Corel issue since I’d have reinstalled it. Fortunately, Apple’s Activity Monitor allowed me to find the problem and Find Any File allowed me to locate all the related files and remove it completely.
