MOTU 828ES Recording Computer Output

Post by cuppa »

I have used MOTU 828 MK2 and 3 and just bought a new 828ES.
The AVB thing is throwing me for a loop. I keep trying different ways to route so that I can record my computer's output in Digital Performer.

I hook the "From Computer" input up "To Computer" and select that exact paired Input in DP. no signal. I seem to be missing something pretty obvious. because it seems like this should work.
I know I could probably force it by outputting analog and then patching physically to a new input pair. But it doesn't feel like this should be necessary.

It is not necessary to do it via an analog path. My 828ES and DP definitely allow me to record from any computer-generated audio directly.

Unfortunately, having set up my 828ES several years ago, advice I might offer on this particular detail is as likely to be wrong as it is to be correct, so I hesitate to get specific. Not sure if the key resides within DP, the 828 Routing Page, macOS Audio Preferences or some combination of the three. Maybe a call/techlink with MOTU will be your best bet.

I figured it out. Going to post what I did here in case anyone else has this problem.

I had to route my Main L/R on the top Inputs row to an empty To Computer pair on the left list. I used To Computer 13/14.
I renamed those outputs to Loop Left and Loop Right to make them easier to find. and then made sure to refresh the screen, and sure enough, it showed up in DP and works perfectly.

Now that I'm getting my head around this routing matrix, I am seeing all the possibilities. Pretty cool system.
