Disappearing TAKES

When a project is saved, a track containing multiple takes can lose one of those takes.

This is my test case which was reproducing the issue reliably:

In Tracks overview, say, create a sequence and add some MIDI data. This will be Take 1

Create a new Take and add some MIDI. Take 2

Verify that both Takes are ok.

View Take 2

Now Save the project.

Take 1 is gone.

I have raised this with MOTU.

I don't use MIDI takes very often. You can't "Show Takes" or Comp them, so I never saw the point. It's pretty much the same thing as using multiple MIDI tracks.

But I followed your steps, and nothing was lost. I assume you closed the project and reopened it. I also tried quitting DP and starting it up again, and the takes were still there.

One thing that was odd: sometimes, although the track I'm recording on shows Take 1 being active, the recording happened on Take 2. Nothing appeared in Take 1. But no recordings were lost.

This didn't happen in every case, but perhaps what you were looking for in Take 1, was in Take 2, and what should have been in Take 2 was in Take 3?

Perhaps this is related to the known bug in 11.04 of the audio files in tracks disappearing when we toggle from one mix to another in DP mix mode? Dunno. But sounds similar.

Takes are really useful in MIDI tracks when experimenting with a different approach. It allows you to quickly and conveniently grab a specific measure or phrase from a previous version and paste it in place into a newer layer. If you use “duplicate take” you can experiment without worry.

I have had tracks “max out” at 6 or 7 takes and have had some disappear. There is a bug there. (Haven’t tried with 11.04).

I often use MIDI takes along with audio takes in a live recording scenario.
Live percussion, guitar and bass with MIDI keyboards connected to VIs.

We'll do a take and then I'll do the "new take" command.
All of the record enabled tracks with now be recorded on take 2.
It has been standard practice for me.

Some weird behaviors lately.
I had some audio takes randomly replaced with audio from another project.
Same length, but wrong audio file.

The MIDI takes were fine, but the audio was not consistently remembered.
Took some searching to find the original files to restore it.
