Can't get past scanning on DP11

Post by dewdman42 »

Anyone have any tips for troubleshooting this?

Basically I upgraded to DP11. Initially it seemed to be working ok. But it would not scan any of my VST3 plugins, it would crash on the first one every time. I think maybe it didn't try to scan my AU plugins initially for some reason, maybe because of holdover files form previous DP version..not sure..

I decided to try to completely uninstall DP11, including I went into Finder and found every folder/file with the name "MOTU" and deleted them all to make sure no old plugin caches hanging around or anything weird like that from previous versions of DP, etc..

Reinstalled DP11

Now I can't get even the AU plugins to scan. When I launch DP11, it asks me which primary type, I choose AU, it crashes while scanning the first plugin. repeat.

What work arounds are there to absolutely clear out DP's caches that may or may not exist, or logs where I can try to figure out WTF is going on. I've already posted support ticket with MOTU but they are out for the weekend.

Divide and conquer. Take away half of your components and see if you still crash. If not try the other half. Repeat until you identify the rogue plugin. For me, it was Modulation Processor from dialogaudio...

The problem is a not a rogue plugin. The first plugin crashes the scan...... FM8. but I'm not going to do that...that is not the problem and would be a very large waste of time, and if it is I'm running back to LogicPro forth with and lots of complaing..hopefully that is not it.

hopefully MOTU will have better news for me tomorrow.

I had exactly the same situation with a plugin setup which works fine in Logic. Good luck.

Shut down and do a Safe Boot of your Mac holding the Shift key. After logging in, shut down and boot normally.

Start DP in Safe Mode by holding the Shift Key. It should start up without scanning. Quit DP and restart to see what happens now. If DP does not fire up in Safe mode, reinstall DP 11—no need to uninstall first—shut down your Mac and reboot.

I have wasted so far today 3 hours trying to get past plugin scanning and still stuck in endless crashing loops. I'm sorry MOTU, but this is BY FAR THE WORSE PLUGIN SCANNING engine I have ever seen in my life, I am familiar with all the DAW's...this is leaps and bounds the worse by 100 miles.....

MOTU tech support has been useless thus far too. Very disappointed. Sorry MOTU you guys need to get this straight before moving on to more features...this is absolutely ridiculous.

I've already tried all the suggestions so far...waste of time..solved nothing...

I'm getting some headway by painstakingly examining each plugin one at a time in the DP plugin manager which is quite time consuming, I have well over a 1000 plugins...

Try to quickly cancel (aprox 2 sec to do --- it sucks) examining VSTs or for few minutes move VST folder out from Library/Audio/Plug-Ins, in DP disable all plugins except MAS plugins.

I am unable to press the skip button fast enough. I have tried to do it for the past half hour about 50 times in a row. It shows the dialog and crashes before I can click on it fast enough. I even placed a marker on the desktop in the location where the dialog will pop up so that the mouse cursor will be waiting in exactly the right place to click as fast as humanly possible, but its not fast enough...crashes DP before I can do it.

I have tried using SHIFT to do safe mode...but that starts DP with audio disabled...and no plugins in the plugin manager, as soon as I enable audio, then it automatically tries to scan the same plugins again and crashes before I can skip.

stuck..

There are two fundamental problems with DP's plugin scanning, maybe three
  1. It crashes WAY too easily. None of my other DAW's do that. Having to sit here and restart DP over and over trying to get through the scanning is ridiculous. It also seems to not mark whatever it needs to mark so that it won't try to repeat scan something that just causes a crash. So for some plugins, it just gets stuck in a loop like this where I can't start it up.
  2. Zero logging available in order to find out which plugin is causing a problem. (never mind that I am using very mainstream plugins that don't cause any problems on my other DAW's)
  3. It should allow more time to hit skip.
the above issues make it very difficult to even troubleshoot what is going on and figure it out, regardless of the fact that DP appears to be be failing with numerous mainstream plugins that pose no problems on my other DAW's

I really hate to hear this and wish I could offer a magic bullet. Does the Mac console give you a clue? If not, does the crash log go directly to MOTU? Have you tried the Disable Crash Reporter script? Is MOTU getting your crash reports?

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=61800&p=525976&hili ... pt#p525976

I haven't tried it on DP 11, but I know for a fact that it still worked on DP 10.xx

Dewdman42,

This maybe a very strange question.....
What kind of graphics card are you using ?
.. and what kind of driver (for the graphics card)?

Really, compared to Logic?

Did DP fire up in Safe Mode? DP's, not the Mac.

I don't have any problems with LogicPro scanning whatsoever. It certainly doesn't crash the program.

Did DP fire up in Safe Mode? DP's, not the Mac.
yes, described above.

OK. I had both Nvidia and macOS version. One worked. One didn't.
