I'm running a mac 09 currently. Having some sputtering difficulty with DP in Mojave and crashing. Which of the year models run smoothly in DP.13 of the 2010 thru 2012 mid year? Thinking about upgrading if it matters.

Hey Brother Gary,
I think it's more-likely to be software-related or a bottleneck somewhere than any physical differences between your '09 model and the '10 and '12s.
After all, all three iterations can be updated to the 5,1 firmware IIRC.

I hear that MM bro and my machine is updated 5,1 and 12 cores. Throughput might, could be different though as 128gb of ram can be used in these later models. If indeed a 2010 frame would suffice it would be cheaper to purchase. I just ponder what Apple did to improve those years models. Great to hear from you man.

The honour is all-mine, Brother G.
Yeah, I think the main differences were RAM speed and
possibly PCI version updates. Can't remember the deets but I
am certain that general throughput was improved.
I just don't feel that the '09 model was obviously-disadvantaged as far as audio work would be concerned. It's just a
feeling 'though, TBH, which is why I suggested it could be a software thing.

My understanding is there is no difference between the 2009, 2010 and 2012 Mac Pros once 2009 firmware is updated with sole exceptions being SMC incompatible and dual CPU 2009s using delidded CPUs. RAM speed is CPU-dependent

I'm curious about your drives, sputtering and crashing could be different problems.
DriveDX is worth at least installing and seeing if you're good there, it's not the be all end all but it will let you know.
Most of what you're experiencing does not sound like it's due to your computer choice, more like a drive issue, CPU overloads, or general DP instability.
So what drives are you recording on? What type of project are you doing when this happens? what does the Effect Performance say when this is going on?

I have tried several ssd's, Samsung 870 qvo, Sandisk ultra and one other. Samsung seems about the best.
I don't have a Pci-e slot available so have not messed with those drives.
Could be the AMD 480 graphics card is pulling allot of speed off the buss but not sure.
