increase number mk4 output channels-advice sought

Post by h_neil »

Hi,

I'm new-ish to audio engineering topics and am seeking advice about hardware.

I have a MOTU ultralite mk4 running on windows 10.
I'm working on a (max-msp-based) sound installation which I'm anticipating needing more output channels than the 10 max of the mk4.
What is my best option for increasing output channels?
Do I simply need another audio interface, which I'd then operate ('stream'?) through routing in my mk4's audio control interface matrix?

If that is the case and I'd need another interface, I see that the mk4 is discontinued and the mk5 is newly released. Does anyone know if the mk4 and the mk5 operate well in tandem like this on windows? Or would there likely be better compatibility if I have two mk4 interfaces?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I'm not familiar with Max, but assuming Ultralite mk4 using Windows ASIO drivers for audio then an ADAT expander like this might be easiest:

You'd be limited to 24bit, 44.1/48k with that setup to get 8 more inputs and 8 more outputs. It's not easy to aggregate ASIO interfaces in Windows and I don't know if Max allows multiple interface selection via Windows Audio drivers. If you can't select multiple interfaces, then you'd be expanding via ADAT anyway.
