Been making some errors mix-wise, and want to add a subwoofer to my monitor set-up. I use Mackie monitors and the subject 828es. Tips on how to do this? I am always confused when I go into the routing tab on the proControl, but I do have 3 free outs (1,2, and 6), and I figured I could have some sort of aux mix of the main outs sent there ... its eluding me! Ideally want to sum up the l/r, maybe lowpass although that is prob unnecessary and send it out. Oh, and anybody have a recommendation on an active sub? thanks, Bruce

i added a Yamaha HS8S to my msp5 monitors a while ago for the same reason. what i didn't expect was how much better it sounds - went from thinking the little msp5 were ok to wondering what could sound better and still be so revealing - i do have a treated room and use reference 4 software to correct the remaining issues in the monitoring environment.

i just take the stereo out from my 828es that used to go to the monitor pair into the sub. the crossover is set on the sub and then out to the stereo monitor pair.

This is the default setup for subs if you don't want to do any additional routing from your interface.

In addition, most monitor controllers let you select from two or more pairs of speakers and have a dedicated mono sub out so that you may control it independently.

PreSonus and Behringer have 2-pair units with a mono sub out for $129. Besides the standard Mute and Mono controls, if your sub does not have a footswitch to bypass the sub, then these desktop units do.

Those controllers with three pairs out normally use the C pair for a sub. The PreSonus Monitor Station and Mackie Big Knob+ get a lot of love.

I use the passive Radial MC3 and like it a lot. It also does two pairs out with a mono sub but I can adjust the sub level and polarity from my desktop. I see the price is still the same $259 I paid years ago.

In a live situation, subs are really another instrument. We add sounds to the subs to taste, perhaps using an Aux Send. No need to put the flute mic in the sub, right?

In a studio, a sub should be balanced with our main speakers to give an accurate, consistent sound field. As such, I do not favor putting subs on a separate fader in the studio, as it is then too easy to inadvertently mis-calibrate the monitor system response and skew mixes as a result. So, set up a crossover (often included an active sub) to optimize crossover frequency and relative level of sub/mains. Bypass the sub (often a foot switch on the sub) to hear what limited-response speakers will do to your mix.
