Bounce kills audio input to DP

As the title says, but worse. Recording two hardware synths into DP, if you do a realtime bounce to save a step, (I've done this before, rather than using punch to make a perfectly aligned 4 measure audio file, then bouncing to disc etc.), DP loses audio input into the program, all audio input. On top of that it just creates empty audio files.

So, recording audio into DP tracks using auto record etc. works great, and again bouncing those tracks results in the audio inputs going silent. The only way to get audio input into DP back I've found so far is to quit and restart DP.

This should be an easy thing to test if anyone is willing, I'm actually hoping it's just my setup, since then trashing DP and it's preferences etc. might solve it. I've got quite a few other DAWs on this set up, none of the others have this issue.

I’ve noticed I lose audio input as well, under certain circumstances in DP 10.whatever the latest version is. The only fix is to quit and restart DP.

Let me think about it for a bit— I’ll come back here and update my post when I remember the exact circumstances.

Thanks Greg, for me it always happens after bouncing audio with inputs enabled to the outside world.

Two things you might consider:

1. Are you Bouncing MIDI tracks or Freezing them? Do you have the same experience with both?

2. Have you changed your hardware outputs? I set up a *multi-output device* (in System Settings) to drive my Dorrough analog level meter from the headphone output of my Mac Pro at the same time I drive my monitors from my USB audio interface. When I have this multi-output device selected as the hardware output in DP, the audio inputs will not work, so when I want to record tracks, I have to switch the hardware output to just my audio output device. Probably an obscure behavior, but perhaps worth considering.

Good luck.

Hey Rick, I'm recording the audio directly into the audio track, then bouncing the files as separate WAVs.
Freeze wouldn't do anything to help since it's not an issue of me not being able to (initially) record audio into DP, it's an issue of bouncing already recorded audio files crashing DP's audio inputs into DP, so I cannot subsequently record audio at all into DP until I quit and restart DP. For verification I hooked up my MacBook Pro here and the exact same bug exists on it.

So on the MacBook Pro here just bouncing a simple two track stereo master output file kills audio input to DP. Again this is not happening in other DAWs on my system.

Just to add a bit to the conversation, I can say that I lose audio input without bouncing or recording any audio. Again, I need to encounter the anomaly again to confirm 100% the exact situation, but if memory serves, I lose audio input when I change an audio input into an audio track or I change a bus input into an aux track. I use UA Apollo Firewire I/O by the way---

The only fix is to quit/reopen.

So this is a deeper problem than simply a bounce bug. Has anybody reported this to MOTU?

Weird----

Greg

Might be time to post a TechLink at motu.com.

Just reading last months SOS over coffee this morning and there is a DP workshop on the new BTD features. There is a section on real time bounce that may be relevant here re bouncing with live inputs. It basically says you have an option 'Bounce Includes Audio Patch Thru' - when that's selected offline bounces are no longer available. Maybe check/toggle the Audio Patch Thru setting after bouncing.

MOTU Tech Support to the rescue here!

Apparently in Mojave there's a new security preference for mic input. This is in System Preferences / Security and Privacy / Microphone. So Digital Performer is not selected in this preference. This affects audio input into DP. It seems that DP overrides the preference at first, but relinquishes control to this preference after bounce!

So checking Mic Input for DP in System Preference solves the issue.

Oh, crap! I should have guessed this!

I figured out at some point with Mojave that the answer to "Xx would like access to the microphone" is always Okay. The use of the word microphone is inaccurate wording for a lot of audio apps on many machines, but since I learned this I just hit Okay whenever it comes up. No downside so far.

I would have assumed that this was a user error situation but I only have denied access on the laptop, because like you mention it makes you think you’re going to create a feed back loop when you use built in audio.

Anyway in any case it needs to be on or DP will relinquish control of audio input upon bounce. MOTU must face!
