PCI-324 Card Work on OS X Mojave?

Post by Russ Tanner »

I'm considering upgrading an older Mac to 10.14 (Mojave). I have a PCI-324 card and need to know if it will work with Mojave.

Also, I was told that Mojave requires a "Metal" video card, but I have no idea what that means.

I tried searching this forum but the search system won't let me search for "pci-324".

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I don’t know any Mac that you can install Mojave on with the PCI slots that a 324 card requires. You will need the 424e card for those PCIe slots.

I don’t see these for sale at MOTU.com anymore but they do show up on Reverb.com and eBay now and then, usually with other MOTU PCI interfaces. Anything that worked with the 324 will work with a 424e. In addition, you can plug in a 4th unit and you have CueMix.

There are many threads on the video cards required to run Mojave on an older Mac Pro. It’s often easier to search these boards with Google than the Search function.

Thanks for the answer. I appreciate it.

I have been researching and apparently you can install Mojave (and other) OS's on older Macs. I have an older Mac and a PCI-324 card, so I'm exploring the possibility of using this older machine until I can upgrade. It has enough power for me for now.

If the PCI-324 will work in Mojave, then this will an affordable upgrade path for me.

If anyone here has tried the PCI-324 on Mojave, please let me know your experience.

Thanks again.

The card will not be the problem. Finding a Mac to host it is. The last Macs that used a PCI card were single core G5. My 324 is sitting in a G4 that dual-boots OS 9.2 and OS 10.4.11 Tiger. All G4 towers have PCI slots that can take the 324 card.

OS 10.14 requires an Intel Mac. Those have PCIe card slots.

There might be a PCI to PCIe riser or adapter. I remember those being available a long time ago. Something like that might work—I have no idea. If PCIe to PCIx, it won't even though the card might fit. It might be less expensive to find a 424e card.

For the sake of this discussion, the 324 and Original 424 are interchangeable.

There was a dual core G5 2.0G that had PCI (not PCIe or x, or other variations). But I'd be surprised if much made after 2004 will work with a 324. MOTU has an upgrade path to a 424 that I used.

Really?

Of course, I know it but a) it's rare and b) off topic — unless you know how to get a G5 to run Mojave.

I meant to type "had". I didn't know if it was still going.

Right now, there's a 424e on eBay for $400 BIN and 35 people watching and another from Germany just under $500. Same German seller offering it on Reverb for a bit over $500 incl. shipping.

There's a third for $1,150 that includes a pair of HD192s. Any bets that one is open to offers?

So the PCIe-424 will work on High Sierra? I'm still on Yosemite but want to start upgrading....
