DP 10.11 dropping VIs

I'm in the middle of a project that i've opened/saved many times with no problems.

when i opened it tonight, all 4 of the VIs in the project were no longer recognized by DP. I cant open them in the project, and they don't appear as options for assigning output or input tracks. I rebooted DP in safe mode, no help.

I'd like to avoid having to reinstantiate the VIs and re-assign all the tracks if possible---has anyone seen this problem, and a solution?

I'm running 10.11 on a 2016 Macbook pro i7 2.9Ghz, DP is running on the Mac internal ssd, the DP files are on a samsung X5 thunderbolt drive, the VIs are on a separate usb 3 ssd.

many thanks.

Doesn't matter.

Oh yea. Usually, I know the cause (me); sometimes it's a mystery.

Reboot. That might do it.

Burnish your USB connection by unplugging and replugging. This is the most likely cause.

You don't say what the VIs are. If IK, open SampleTank and re-index after you reboot. If Kontakt, a recent install might have messed up a path—open Native Access and re-link your libraries. If UVI, use its browser to reload your VIs.

If it's something you did (there are many possibilities), these work for me.

Try is recover the project via Snapshots — you have a 24 hour window:

or go back to an earlier AutoSave that was done before the mystery event. Open and save under a different name. This saves my butt on occasion. The last time, I opened and saved 12 Autosaved versions before I found one early enough. I then opened the last one and exported my sound bites, imported to the older file. Once done, I trashed the versions I no longer needed.
DP is running on the Mac internal ssd, the DP files are on a samsung X5 thunderbolt drive, the VIs are on a separate usb 3 ssd.
My current iMac Pro has a 4TB onboard storage. I bought it for the express purpose of being able to have all my active project files on the System drive along with NI (Kontakt, Komplete etc.) and IK (SampleTank etc.). My other libraries and "archived but I might need them" projects are on a pair of 4TB SSDs in a Thunderbolt housing. This stopped the mystery unlinking.

What you described used to occur about once a month for me Nowadays, only when I do something wrong—which does happen. Because of the above, I've never lost more than a little work and an hour or so.

So I think you might be miss typing this part in bold? Are you talking about Kontakt or Mach 5 libraries here? Your Virtual Instrument (i.e. VSTi/AUi). plug ins should be for the most part in your main Library/Audio/Plug-Ins folder in Components and VST respectively. If you are talking about libraries, then for the most part at least Kontakt etc. should open up, and tell you you have missing samples.

One thing, are other audio tracks and sounds playing through DP? It could be the audio interface, that's generally when I get "missing" VSTs.

yes, I was unclear about that 3rd ssd. the VIs are installed on my main internal drive and the samples are on the 3rd ssd.

re: kontakt specifically, I'm running chris hein horns on it, but this wasnt the typical problem of the VI not finding the samples. the VI would not open at all and did not show up as a source or destination in DP.

yes, other audio files did play, I'm using an 8m MOTU interface that's been rock solid.

I've moved on with an autosave file, but still at a loss for what I did to cause this.

And you may never know.

Now that you've explained it better, I had a similar issue happen to me over Christmas on one file. I caused the problem accidentally by dragging an audio file between the MIDI and the SampleTank VI and saving before I noticed the problem. Lost the VI, ok, undo didn't work (why?). Re-order the tracks correctly, open the ST4 player and rescan, find the harp, reload and I'm good. Save, do more work on the choir tracks, sounds good. Save, put it to bed. A few days later, I open it again and ST4 is gone as was the piano roll in the MIDI track. ?!?!? I had a lot of work in that piano roll. Found an AutoSave from before I made the mistake to recover it and saved under a new name. Whew! Bounced my sound bites from the recent version as mono files so I could save that work. reopened the earlier version and dropped them in. Now I was caught up. 30 minutes to recover a few hours—had I needed to continue in either version without access to the other, that's what I was looking at.

Although I know the mistake that initiated the problem, I have no idea how it got so screwed up. If it never happens again, I'm good.
