I think I paid about 1500 bucks for my Mac Mini a few months ago.
Now there's an m1 chip driven Mac Mini for only 699?
Am I missing something here?

You must have maxed out the Mini you bought. Mine was about C$800

Maybe I'll just wait and replace my 2008 iMac with a (hopefully) new m1 iMac and link them together from the other room!

A maxed out M1 Mini is $1,699. This is with 16GB RAM and 2TB SSD.
A Magic Mouse 2 adds $99 or Magic trackpad II is $149. Magic Keyboard: $99 or $149 with numeric key pad
AppleCare+ adds $99.
Then you need a monitor. 4Ks run $400–700 or so. 5K is $1,300 — $1,600. 6K is $5,000–$7,000

well for one, DP10 isn't going to run on the M1 for an indefinite amount of time. We have no idea when DP will run on Apple Silicon Macs.
add in all the plug ins and other applications that are not AS compatible

If bleeding edge is your bag, baby, go for an M1 Mac as your studio computer today. Otherwise, either wait until software catches up or, if money is not an issue, buy one to mess around with for fun. It is hard for me to imagine that my essential plugins, not to mention DP, will all be ready to run natively on Apple Silicon much before we celebrate the arrival of 2022. But it is possible...
I must say that, given the early (and outstanding!) test results we are seeing for Apple Silicon, I am encouraged that my next computer might still be a Mac. Until these new Macs were released, I'd been thinking the only thing that made sense financially for my next studio computer would be a PC or Mac Faux (Hackintosh).
Although my 5,1 Mac Pro is still working perfectly, and I have a backup ready to roll, entropy and the need for speed make eventual replacement inevitable.

... with a Cheese Grater AS-style hopefully in both our cases, Sir Markus.

Eggsactly. Room for some internal storage with, say, four M14-style chips for a total of 32 cores... the possibility of Apple releasing an AS-powered X-Mac is tantalizing indeed!

$1500 is about the price of a stock i5 with an upgrade to an i7 and 16GB of ram. Comes out to just under $1700 after tax here in CA. Not even close to maxed out. You can take it into super iMac territory price wise if you want to start pushing the ram and SSD in it.

Once DP is Big Sur compatible, it should run on the M1 over Rosetta II — at lease, that's the promise.
We saw this before with the transition from the PPC to Intel.

Has there been an announcement about Big Sur compatible?
I don't see anything on their site about it.
I was going to pick up the 10core iMac now I'm thinking I should wait.

Compatability with what? DP? Motu says it isn't.

Yes DP.
I didn't see that on their site.

Someone quoted it on this board. I haven't looked for it on their site.
