Hey folks.....
I'm looking for a (hopefully) quick/easy way to capture little bits of audio from a YouTube video, SoundCloud audio, etc. I have Softorino YouTube Converter which is great at capturing full-length videos, or just the audio from them (highly recommended, btw), but have been racking my brain to come up with a easy way to capture little 5-10 second clips.
I can stick my phone in front of the speaker and record a Music Memo or Voice Memo, but I'd like to think there might be a more elegant way.
Audio Hijack looks very interesting. Can I assume that—since you all are recommending it—that you haven’t noticed any negative interactions with DP?

I haven't used it to capture audio from DP. I've used it with iTunes, Firefox and Edge with no issues. You can download it to try before buying. They also have a nice, quick and easy editor app named Fission. After audio capture you can select 'edit in Fission' to tighten things up a little.
Thanks - did not know about this. I use Microsoft Edge which can install the Chrome extensions. This one's good for PC also.

You can do it for free with Soundflower or any of the freeware Audio Unit device drivers (e.g. blackhole or JackOS). There is an article about it in Macworld on capturing screen recordings focussing on capturing videos with audio but you can do it with audio alone.
Set Soundflower as the audio device in the menu bar. Fire up Quicktime player, and select New Audio Recording. In the window, beside the record button click the drop down and set the source to Soundflower. Start and stop recording as you like and save etc.
Soundflower itself can be tricky to find, but it's around. If you google soundflower download there are a few hits, just be careful which download link you click.

If/when you need to pull video with audio off the screen, this is another option. Formerly known as iSkysoft Video Convertor Ultimate, it now UniConverter. I do have to pull some stuff off the www for clients and when the normal d/l tools don't work, this always does. Overkill, perhaps. But also very useful in converting to and from various audio and video formats (pretty much any one you can think of and then some).
I've found this to be the most useful conversion utility in my arsenal. That is grabs audio with video from anywhere on the screen is also a big plus.
I know there's a lot of free stuff out there, but the simple fact is, you often get what you pay for. If all you want is bread and water, that's cool. I usually want a steak with mashed potatoes, smothered mushrooms, a glass of wine, a honkin' Caesar salad, ending with dessert and coffee, I don't go to the bread line. I go to the fancy pants restaurant in the nice part of town. My taste in software is similar. The best stuff I can get to do the job right, and fast, and the first time I try.
Or you can squeak by with the freebees. Choose wisely!

Speaking of Hijack.... has anyone used this one from the same company?
Some interfaces allow you to route computer audio right back in to DP... like any of the current MOTU AVB series.

I used to be able to do that with my original Ultralite and can do it with my current M4.

Hey Gang....
Thanks for the replies and recommendations. I ended up going with Rogue Amoeba Piezo, which is perfect for my need and just $19. A great way to capture audio from the Mac.
(Mac only, I'm afraid.)

Ever since I had feedback problems using Soundflower over Mojave and Catalina, I downloaded and installed Blackhole:
So far, Mac only but a Windows version is in the works.
Although Soundflower does work over Mojave and Catalina, SoundflowerBed.app, the routing GUI, does not. That may have been the reason for the internal feedback problems I found. I had workarounds but all caused some phase distortion and the the audio suffered to varying degrees. The Soundflower.kxt files have now been purged from the system on both machines.
